Uganda is set to make a historic debut at the World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt, thanks to the dynamic duo Juma Said and Patrick Ocheng. These two trailblazers defied expectations by winning the intense North African Qualifier, earning their spot on the global stage. Far from being overwhelmed, Said and Ocheng are brimming with confidence, fueled by meticulous preparation and a “nothing to lose” mindset. They are ready to challenge the world’s best and aim for nothing less than victory, proving that African darts is a force to be reckoned with.

From Kampala to Frankfurt: A Historic Qualification

The darts world is buzzing as the World Cup of Darts approaches, held at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt. Among the familiar faces, two newcomers from Uganda, Juma Said and Patrick Ocheng, are generating significant interest. Their journey to this prestigious tournament is a testament to their skill and determination.

Their qualification follows a groundbreaking moment in African darts history. At the 2026 World Championship, Kenya’s David Munyua caused a sensation by defeating Mike De Decker in the first round, putting African talent firmly on the map. Inspired by this success, the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) introduced an additional continental qualifier specifically for the World Cup of Darts. It was in this highly competitive North African Qualifier that Said and Ocheng shone brightest, securing their coveted spot.

“The qualifier was incredibly tough, featuring many seasoned players – the best from North and East Africa,” Said recounted. Despite the high stakes and strong competition, their belief never wavered. When asked if qualification was their expectation, both players shared a laugh. “Absolutely! We were ready for it,” Ocheng declared. “And we pulled it off.”

The Power of Partnership: A Winning Formula

What sets Said and Ocheng apart is their long-standing partnership and deep understanding of each other’s game. This wasn’t a last-minute pairing; it’s a bond forged over countless matches.

  • Extensive Doubles Experience: “We’re used to playing doubles together,” Said explained. “We do it often and we know how to handle each other. We’ve won many prizes as a pair.”
  • Local League Advantage: Ocheng added, “In our local league, we play doubles, so we’re accustomed to that format. Even within our team, we always pair up.” This consistent practice in a competitive doubles environment gave them a crucial edge during the qualifier.

This synergy is a significant asset as they head into a tournament where teamwork is paramount.

Intense Preparation: Leaving Nothing to Chance

Said and Ocheng are not just showing up for the experience; they are meticulously preparing to compete at the highest level. Their dedication is evident in their rigorous training schedule.

“We’ve started a series of intensive training sessions,” Said confirmed. “We’re currently staying together in Gulu [a major city in northern Uganda] to train. We need to ensure we’re fully prepared and eliminate any doubts. We have ample time to train thoroughly.”

Their support team plays a vital role in their professional readiness. One of their coaches elaborated on their strategy:

  • Challenging Sparring Partners: “We’ve arranged for many strong players to challenge and motivate them, keeping them competitive.”
  • World Cup Format Simulation: “We also practice in the specific format of the World Cup, so Juma and Ocheng get into that rhythm.”
  • Multi-City Training Tour: After Gulu, their journey continues to Kampala [Uganda’s capital] for more practice matches, followed by a training stint in Nakuru [a major city in Kenya]. “We have a comprehensive program to ensure they are ready by June,” their coach stated.

Fearless Underdogs: “We Have Nothing to Lose”

Despite being debutants on such a grand stage, Said and Ocheng are remarkably unfazed by the prospect of facing darts giants like England, Wales, or the Netherlands. Their confidence borders on audacious.

“We will be ready for any opponent,” Ocheng asserted, dismissing any fear of facing stars like Michael van Gerwen or Luke Littler. “Our advantage is that people will expect us to be beaten. We have nothing to lose.”

Said echoed this sentiment, highlighting the pressure on their more established rivals. “The other countries will feel more pressure. We even prefer facing bigger opponents early on; they might need time to warm up.” He drew a parallel to David Munyua’s upset victory over Mike De Decker in the first round of the 2026 World Championship, a clear reminder that anything is possible.

When asked about their ultimate goal for the World Cup, their smiles returned, revealing their unwavering ambition. “Of course, our goal is to win, to claim the first prize,” they declared.

Beyond Frankfurt: A Vision for the Future

Said and Ocheng’s partnership isn’t just for the World Cup; they have long-term plans. “We will continue playing doubles and will pair up for the next qualifying tournaments,” Said confirmed.

This commitment to doubles doesn’t mean they’re neglecting their individual aspirations. Both players intend to compete in the qualifying tournaments for the 2027 World Darts Championship. “Absolutely! We’re already planning for that,” Said revealed. “There will be two qualifying tournaments for the World Championship.” He concluded with a playful wink, “So, if I qualify through the South and Ocheng through the North, we could end up playing each other in the World Championship final, haha!” This playful remark underscores their individual ambition while celebrating their strong partnership.
