The Dutch Darts Championship in Maastricht witnessed an extraordinary Sunday evening, as three of the four semi-finalists hailed from the Netherlands. This guaranteed at least one Dutch player in the final, but the big question was: could it be an all-Dutch showdown? The answer came swiftly: Yes! Danny Noppert overcame a spirited Gian van Veen in a thrilling encounter, while Niels Zonneveld delivered a commanding performance to defeat England’s Stephen Bunting, thereby setting up an exciting all-Dutch final.

Thrilling Semifinals Unfold

The Dutch Darts Championship offered a rare treat for home fans, with a strong contingent of local talent reaching the semi-finals. Anticipation was high for two captivating matches that would determine who advanced to the grand finale.

Match 1: Noppert Edges Out Van Veen in a Dutch Derby

The first semi-final pitted two impressive Dutchmen against each other: Gian van Veen and Danny Noppert. Both players had shown exceptional form throughout the tournament. Van Veen notably averaged an astonishing 120+ in his 6-0 whitewash of Sebastian Białecki, while Noppert posted an equally impressive 113+ average in his quarter-final victory over Luke Woodhouse.

The match began cautiously, with both players finding their rhythm. The first five legs went with the throw, meaning each player held their own leg. However, in the sixth leg, Noppert found another gear. He hit two maximum 180s and secured the first break of the match on double-10. The Friesian then consolidated his break by hitting double-6, taking a significant 5-2 lead in legs.

Van Veen, nicknamed ‘The Giant’, wasn’t ready to concede. He fought back, closing the gap to 3-5 with a 17-dart finish. Recognizing the urgency, he elevated his game, hitting two 140s and another 180 before finishing on 41 to break Noppert’s throw. A 25-dart finish in the tenth leg saw Van Veen level the match at 5-5, completely reopening the contest. Despite Van Veen’s late surge, it was Noppert who regained composure, hitting a crucial 13-dart leg to reach match point. Van Veen had a shot at bullseye to stay in the game but missed. Noppert seized the opportunity, checking out 25 to secure his place in the final.

Match 2: Zonneveld Completes the All-Dutch Final

The stage was set for Niels Zonneveld to complete the all-Dutch final dream. Zonneveld had defeated Wessel Nijman in the quarter-finals and now faced England’s experienced Stephen Bunting. Bunting, known as ‘The Bullet’, had played a superb match against Damon Heta, reaching the semi-finals thanks to excellent finishing.

Bunting started strong, holding his opening leg with a 13-dart finish. Zonneveld responded by holding his own leg in 14 darts. In the third leg, Zonneveld delivered the first break of the match with a brilliant 104 checkout, taking a 2-1 lead. However, he couldn’t consolidate the break, missing chances in the fourth leg, allowing Bunting to level the score with an 18-dart leg. Bunting then edged ahead again on double-2, but from that point, Zonneveld took command.

Zonneveld quickly leveled with a 16-dart leg, then followed up with a 14-dart break to lead 4-3. He continued his momentum, securing a 95-finish to win his third consecutive leg. Bunting managed to halt Zonneveld’s run with a 94-finish, but Zonneveld still held the advantage, with Bunting needing to break his throw to get back into the match.

The ninth leg saw both players struggle with their scoring, but Zonneveld remained unfazed. He sealed the leg with a superb 106 checkout, reaching match point at 6-4. In the eleventh leg, Zonneveld had his first match dart on 80 but missed. Bunting also failed to hit his crucial double. Zonneveld then stepped up again, hitting double-5 to secure the victory and proudly complete the all-Dutch final!
