Maastricht is buzzing with excitement as the Dutch Darts Championship reaches its thrilling semi-final stage! A remarkable three out of four contenders hail from the Netherlands, setting the stage for a potential ‘Orange Crush.’ Gian van Veen, Danny Noppert, and Niels Zonneveld have all delivered standout performances, solidifying their spots and delighting the home crowd. Only England’s Stephen Bunting stands in their way, aiming to spoil what could be an unforgettable night for Dutch darts.
The Road to the Semi-Finals: A Night of High Drama
Gian van Veen: Consistent Brilliance
Following his spectacular victory on Saturday, Gian van Veen continued his impressive run. He comfortably dispatched Brendan Dolan before facing Ryan Searle in the opening match of the final session. The crowd was treated to a high-octane affair, with the first five legs all completed in 14 darts or less. Van Veen briefly broke this pattern with a 16-darter, only for Searle to respond with a 13-darter, bringing the score to 3-3. However, that was Searle’s last successful leg. Van Veen powered through, securing the next three legs in 15, 17, and 13 darts respectively, to claim a convincing 6-3 victory. His average of just under 100 once again showcased his strong and consistent form.
Danny Noppert: Record-Breaking Performance
Next up, Danny Noppert delivered a truly sensational performance. Often described as inconsistent in European Tour final sessions, the Frisian star was anything but on home soil. He started strongly with legs in 13 and 16 darts. After Woodhouse hit a 14-darter, Noppert truly ignited, unleashing a flurry of exceptional legs in 13, 11, and another 13 darts. His average soared to well over 110, leaving his opponent bewildered. Woodhouse managed to snatch one more leg, but ‘The Freeze’ sealed his victory with a 14-darter. Noppert’s final average was an astounding 113.42 – a new personal best and his highest ever average in a PDC match!
Niels Zonneveld: Clutch Victory in All-Dutch Clash
The third match of the evening guaranteed another Dutch semi-finalist, as former neighbours Wessel Nijman and Niels Zonneveld faced off. This encounter started with explosive darts, much like the previous matches. Nijman opened with two 11-dart legs, while Zonneveld found a 13-darter in between. Nijman seemed poised to pull away with a break, but Zonneveld quickly clawed his way back, leveling the score with legs in 11 and 15 darts, including a crucial 120 checkout. Two 17-darters later, Nijman reached match point, but Zonneveld refused to yield. He forced a deciding leg with legs in 12 and 15 darts, capped by a magnificent 128 checkout. Zonneveld then clinched the match with a 16-darter, showcasing incredible composure under pressure.
Stephen Bunting: The Sole Non-Dutch Contender
The fourth match featured the only non-Dutch battle, as Stephen Bunting and Damon Heta fought for the last semi-final spot. While not reaching the same stratospheric averages as some earlier games, it was still an entertaining contest. After the first four legs were shared, Bunting landed a significant blow: with Heta waiting on double ten, ‘The Bullet’ coolly checked out a massive 148 finish. He followed this with a 74 finish in the next leg, extending his lead to 5-2, and then sealed his victory two legs later. Bunting now stands as the sole non-Dutch player in the semi-finals, the only one who can potentially disrupt the ‘Orange Party’ in Maastricht.
