Cardiff is set to host an electrifying Night 5 of the BetMGM Premier League Darts! Welsh heroes Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price are ready to ignite the Utilita Arena. League leader Jonny Clayton, currently unbeaten in quarter-finals, faces Gian van Veen in a top-of-the-table clash. Gerwyn Price, a Night 2 winner, takes on the red-hot Stephen Bunting. Other blockbuster matches include Michael van Gerwen against reigning champion Luke Humphries, and Luke Littler battling Josh Rock. With crucial ranking points up for grabs, the competition is fierce as players vie for a spot in the Finals Night.

Welsh Dragons Take Centre Stage in Cardiff

The BetMGM Premier League Darts roadshow arrives in Cardiff on Thursday evening for an eagerly anticipated Night 5. The Utilita Arena will be buzzing as two of Wales’ most prominent darting stars, former World Cup champions Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price, aim to thrill their home crowd.

Clayton’s Dominance and Home Crowd Hopes

Jonny Clayton, the 2021 Premier League champion, has enjoyed a sensational return to form this season. He arrives on home soil with a significant two-point lead at the top of the table. Remarkably, the 51-year-old ‘Ferret’ is yet to be defeated in the quarter-finals, showcasing incredible consistency. His impressive run includes back-to-back victories over world number one Luke Littler in Glasgow and Belfast, winning both encounters by a convincing aggregate score of 12-4.

Clayton faces another formidable challenge against Gian van Veen, setting up a clash between the league’s top two players. Van Veen has been incredibly consistent, reaching a hat-trick of nightly finals in the opening four weeks.

However, the prospect of playing in front of a passionate Welsh crowd is an occasion Clayton is determined to cherish. “I’ve waited three years to do this! I’m really excited!” insisted the world number five. “The Welsh crowd are second to none. There’s no better place, it is fantastic. The atmosphere tomorrow night is going to be special.”

He even dreams of an all-Welsh final: “I want to play against Gezzy in that final! It would be a great night if we could have the two Welsh boys in the final.” And a personal highlight: “It’ll be a dream if I could hit a nine-darter in front of my home crowd like Josh Rock did last week. That was fantastic, and hopefully I can do the same tomorrow night!” A nine-darter is darts’ equivalent of a perfect game, where a player finishes a leg in the fewest possible darts – nine throws.

Price vs. The Resurgent Bunting

Gerwyn Price, who celebrated a victory on Night Two in Antwerp, will also be a major draw. He kicks off his challenge against the newly resurgent Stephen Bunting. After three consecutive quarter-final defeats, Bunting dramatically ignited his Play-Off push with a trio of superb performances on Night Four in Belfast, dispatching Luke Humphries, Jonny Clayton, and Gian van Veen to claim the nightly title.

That triumph propelled the Liverpudlian up to fifth in the league table. A victory over home favourite Price would see him draw level on points with the 2020/21 World Champion.

Bunting, who struggled in last year’s Premier League, reflected on his turnaround: “I learnt a lot from last year. It took me a long while to get that first win, and I’m happy I’ve got that monkey off my back now. I still believe I’m one of the best players in the world and deserve to be in this Premier League; that win in Belfast goes a long way to say why I should be here.”

Key Matchups and League Implications

Beyond the Welsh headliners, Night 5 features other crucial encounters:

  • Michael van Gerwen v Luke Humphries

The evening’s opening clash pits seven-time Premier League winner Michael van Gerwen against reigning World Champion Luke Humphries. Humphries currently sits three points adrift of the top four Play-Off positions despite boasting an impressive tournament average of 103.25 across his six matches. Van Gerwen is in third spot, averaging almost seven points less, highlighting the importance of consistency over raw scoring power.

  • Luke Littler v Josh Rock

This quarter-final sees seventh take on eighth in the league table. World Championship finalist Luke Littler faces Josh Rock, who is fresh from his spectacular nine-dart finish in Belfast last week. Littler himself landed a nine-darter on his previous visit to Cardiff in 2025, achieving perfection against Van Gerwen on his way to claiming the nightly crown. The 19-year-old will be hoping for a repeat performance, while Rock is still searching for his first points of the season after four consecutive 6-2 defeats.

Premier League Format Explained

The BetMGM Premier League Darts operates on a weekly knockout format. Ranking points are awarded each night:

  • Winner: 5 points
  • Runner-up: 3 points
  • Semi-finalists: 2 points

These points form the league table, from which the top four players will progress to the ultimate Finals Night at The O2 in London on Thursday, May 28, where the overall champion will be crowned.
