Michael van Gerwen has once again proven his dominance, securing his second PDC Nordic Darts Masters title in a dramatic final against Luke Humphries. After a challenging tournament that saw him survive a match dart in the quarter-finals and battle through tough semi-final and final encounters, Van Gerwen ultimately triumphed 8-7 in a thrilling deciding leg, showcasing his trademark composure under pressure.

Tournament Overview: The Road to the Final

The sixth edition of the PDC Nordic Darts Masters in Copenhagen delivered a weekend of high-stakes darts, culminating in a spectacular final. The tournament began on Friday with the first round, where top players and local talents clashed.

First Round Surprises and Strong Starts

Both Dutch participants, Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen, successfully navigated their opening matches. Van Gerwen, fresh from a holiday, showed little rust as he comfortably defeated Sweden’s Oskar Lukasiak 6-2. Gian van Veen also impressed, overcoming Daniel Larsson 6-3 in the session’s final match, highlighted by a superb 167 checkout.

However, the first round wasn’t without its upsets. Defending champion Stephen Bunting was the sole PDC top player to be eliminated, falling 6-5 to Viktor Tingström. Bunting had been 5-3 up but astonishingly missed 25 doubles, allowing Tingström to complete a remarkable comeback. Gerwyn Price also faced a tough challenge, needing a decisive eleventh leg to defeat Darius Labanauskas, who agonisingly missed a match dart on double 16.

Other notable results included world number one Luke Littler’s dominant 6-1 victory over Dutch-born Cor Dekker, and Luke Humphries’ 6-3 win against Jeffrey de Graaf.

Quarter-Final Drama Unfolds

Saturday’s final day kicked off with the quarter-finals, where the tension immediately ramped up. Michael van Gerwen faced an unexpected struggle against the surprise package, Viktor Tingström. The Swede led 5-3 and even had a match dart on tops at 5-4, but Van Gerwen’s resilience shone through as he snatched a 6-5 victory. Unfortunately for the Dutch contingent, Gian van Veen’s journey ended here, as he lost 6-5 to Luke Humphries in another deciding leg, despite fighting back from a 5-3 deficit.

Elsewhere, Jonny Clayton defeated fellow Welshman Gerwyn Price 6-3, while Luke Littler continued his strong form with a comfortable 6-1 win over James Wade.

Semi-Final Showdowns

  • Michael van Gerwen vs. Jonny Clayton: Clayton started strongly, taking a 2-0 lead. However, “Mighty Mike” quickly turned the tide, roaring back to a 5-2 advantage with impressive darts, including a 13-darter and high finishes of 110 and 122. Van Gerwen maintained his composure to secure a 7-4 victory, booking his spot in a third World Series final of the current season.
  • Luke Littler vs. Luke Humphries: This was a highly anticipated rematch of the recent Premier League final. After an even start, Humphries delivered a crucial blow with a magnificent 164 checkout to break Littler’s throw, establishing a 3-1 lead. While Littler managed to break back to level the score at 4-4, Humphries responded immediately with another stunning finish, a 132 checkout. “Cool Hand Luke” then held his throw to take a 6-4 lead and ultimately closed out the match 7-5, setting up a blockbuster final against Van Gerwen.

A Nail-Biting Final: Van Gerwen vs. Humphries

The final, starting around 10:00 PM in Denmark, was a fitting climax to the tournament. Luke Humphries began brilliantly, winning the first two legs. The next three legs went with the throw, featuring a 109 finish from Van Gerwen and a 75 finish from Humphries. Van Gerwen then broke back with a 14-darter in the sixth leg to level at 3-3, before holding his own throw in just 11 darts to take his first lead at 4-3.

The Dutchman extended his lead with a double break, hitting a 100 finish to go 5-3 up. However, Humphries immediately broke back in 18 darts and then held his throw with a rapid 12-darter, bringing the final back to an intense 5-5.

The drama continued into the eleventh leg, where Van Gerwen missed an opportunity to finish 60, allowing Humphries to secure a crucial break with a 14-darter. Yet, Humphries couldn’t consolidate, as Van Gerwen broke straight back to make it 6-6. Legs 13 and 14 also went with the throw, pushing the match into a thrilling deciding leg at 7-7.

With Van Gerwen having the advantage of throwing first in the decider, the pressure was immense. Humphries had the first clear chance at victory, aiming for a 127 checkout, but agonisingly missed the bullseye. This opened the door for Van Gerwen, who stepped up to a remaining 72. With characteristic coolness, “Mighty Mike” needed just one dart at tops to seal the leg and the match, winning 8-7 and claiming his second Nordic Darts Masters title.

Match Statistics: A Battle of Averages

  • Michael van Gerwen: Average 98.90 / Double Percentage 57.1%
  • Luke Humphries: Average 98.83 / Double Percentage 30.4%

The statistics highlight the incredibly close nature of the final, with both players averaging almost identically. However, Van Gerwen’s superior finishing on the doubles proved to be the decisive factor in the high-pressure moments.
