Motomu Sakai, the undeniable force of Japanese darts, staged a remarkable performance during the second weekend of the 2026 Steel Tour Japan in Osaka. He not only extended his commanding lead in the Order of Merit but also solidified his position as the frontrunner for a coveted spot at the World Championships. Despite a minor setback in the first event, Sakai quickly rebounded, securing three consecutive titles and demonstrating a level of consistency that has left his rivals trailing. His path to Alexandra Palace now seems almost guaranteed, requiring an extraordinary shift in fortune for any other player to catch him.

Osaka Showdown: A Weekend of High-Stakes Darts

The 2026 Steel Tour Japan continued its high-octane action, bringing the nation’s top darts talent to Osaka for a crucial block of four events. Coming into the weekend, Motomu Sakai held a significant lead in the Order of Merit, a testament to his consistent performances, having reached the final in all four previous events despite only clinching one title. Keita Ono and Yutaka Sunakawa were his closest contenders, with last year’s champion, Mitsuhiko Tatsunami, in fourth.

This year, the stakes are higher than ever. With the Tour playoffs abolished, the winner of the Order of Merit directly qualifies for the prestigious World Championships. This new rule eliminates the previous format where the top 16 battled for a spot on the final day, placing immense pressure on consistent performance throughout the season.

Event 1: Arihara Breaks Sakai’s Streak

Saturday morning kicked off with intense competition. The semi-finals featured a dream lineup of arguably Japan’s four best players: Arihara, Azemoto, Sakai, and Okano. However, it was a surprising turn for the dominant Sakai:

  • Motomu Sakai lost his semi-final match to Ryuta Arihara 5-1, despite an impressive average of 93.07.
  • This defeat marked a significant moment: it was the first time in 2026 that Sakai, often referred to as an “Ally Pally cult-hero” (a nod to his popularity at the World Championships venue, Alexandra Palace), had failed to reach a final.
  • Ryuta Arihara capitalized on this, going on to claim his first Steel Tour Japan title of the year. This added to his already impressive streak of three consecutive Asian Tour titles from just two weeks prior.
  • Remarkably, Arihara has now won Event 5 of the season for the last three consecutive years.

Event 2: Sakai Resumes Dominance

Saturday afternoon saw a swift return to form for Motomu Sakai. While the morning’s victor, Ryuta Arihara, surprisingly exited in the first round, Sakai powered through the competition, reaching the final by losing only four legs en route. He faced Joji Kanuma, who was making his very first final appearance on the Japan Tour after two and a half years on the circuit and three previous semi-final losses.

Sakai delivered a dominant display, securing his second title of the season and further extending his lead in the race for the World Championships spot.

Event 3: Revenge and Rising Stars

The action continued into Sunday morning, bringing another highly anticipated clash. For the second time in two days, Japan’s two top players, Motomu Sakai and Ryuta Arihara, met in the semi-finals. This time, Sakai exacted his revenge, defeating Arihara 5-2 and reaching an incredible sixth final in just seven events!

In the final, Sakai faced Tatsuya Uekusa, a true underdog who had never before advanced past the Last 16 in a Japan Tour event. While Sakai ultimately claimed his second consecutive title, Uekusa’s impressive run was a major highlight of the event.

Another standout performance came from Yutaka Sunakawa in the Last 32, who put in the weekend’s best display by beating Naoya Sato 4-0 with an astonishing average of 101.90.

Event 4: Sakai’s Triple Crown and Unassailable Lead

The weekend concluded on Sunday afternoon with familiar faces battling in the later rounds. For the second time in three events, Motomu Sakai met Joji Kanuma in the final, with Sakai once again emerging victorious. This win marked his third consecutive title on the Steel Tour Japan, a feat that propels him into an almost unassailable position at the top of the Order of Merit.

Ryuta Arihara also showed his class again, recording the weekend’s second 100+ average in the Last 16, beating Shoichi Yanase 4-1 with an average of 100.17.

Motomu Sakai: On the Brink of World Championship Qualification

Having reached the final in an astounding seven out of eight events in 2026 and securing four titles, Motomu Sakai now leads the Steel Tour Japan Order of Merit by a considerable margin. While his spot at Alexandra Palace – the iconic venue for the World Championships – isn’t mathematically confirmed, it would require a near-miracle for him to be overtaken.

To challenge Sakai’s lead, rivals such as Keita Ono, Joji Kanuma, Akimune Matsuyoshi, or Mitsuhiko Tatsunanmi would need to win all four remaining titles of the season. Simultaneously, Sakai would have to perform exceptionally poorly, picking up almost no points over the entire final weekend. In reality, just a single run to the Quarter-Finals, or two appearances in the Last 32, would be enough to officially secure Sakai’s return to Alexandra Palace.

The Steel Tour Japan will culminate in its final weekend in Kanagawa at the end of September, where the 2026 Tour Champion will be crowned, likely cementing Motomu Sakai’s well-deserved qualification.
