The UK Open 2026 has delivered an electrifying fifth round, showcasing both nail-biting finishes and surprising upsets. Reigning champion Luke Littler narrowly escaped an early exit against Kevin Doets, while darts legend Michael van Gerwen faced an unexpected challenge before securing his spot. Luke Humphries continued his dominant run, and Welsh stars Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price also advanced. However, the tournament saw major champions Michael Smith and Mike De Decker dramatically knocked out, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion with most of the sport’s elite still in contention.

Giants Tested: Littler and Van Gerwen Fight Through

The UK Open in Minehead truly felt like a global darts festival, bringing together immense talent from across the continent. Fortunately for fans, the focus remained squarely on darts, and the specialists delivered another memorable session.

Current UK Open champion, Luke Littler, is still on track to defend his title, but he was pushed to his absolute limit. His match against Kevin Doets was a tense affair, with Littler having to work considerably harder than expected for his narrow victory. Doets, despite a superior average and more maximums, ultimately couldn’t convert his chances on the crucial outer ring, leaving Littler to clinch the win with his clinical finishing. This close call highlighted that even “The Nuke” can be vulnerable, especially earlier in the day.

Over on the secondary stage, three-time UK Open champion Michael van Gerwen found himself in a surprisingly competitive battle against Germany’s Kai Gotthardt. The match was perfectly balanced for the first ten legs, with both players trading blows. It wasn’t until Van Gerwen hit the accelerator that he finally asserted his dominance, securing victory by only conceding one additional leg.

Dominance and Smooth Progress

While some stars struggled, others sailed through their matches with remarkable ease.

  • Luke Humphries: The reigning Premier League champion endured a wait before stepping onto the main stage against Dave Chisnall. Once there, “Cool Hand” unleashed his signature scoring power, maintaining complete control and never looking threatened. He calmly progressed, firmly remaining in the hunt for the title.
  • Welsh Hopes Alive: The double World Cup-winning duo of Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price both safely advanced. “The Ferret” (Clayton) produced a composed display to edge past Darryl Pilgrim. “The Iceman” (Price) faced a more spirited challenge from young Dutch talent Wessel Nijman, who matched him stride for stride for half the contest before Price shifted gears to secure a convincing win.
  • James Wade: “The Machine,” a UK Open ever-present, enjoyed a considerably smoother passage. He dismantled German giant Gabriel Clemens with ruthless efficiency, conceding just two legs as he strolled into the sixth round in his typical stealthy fashion.

Major Upsets and Notable Victories

The afternoon session proved agonizing for two decorated major champions who both succumbed in dramatic last-leg deciders:

  • Former world champion Michael Smith was narrowly edged out by the formidable Ryan Searle.
  • 2024 World Grand Prix winner Mike De Decker saw his campaign extinguished by a resurgent Rob Cross.

However, many other top players secured their spots:

  • Gary Anderson: The Scottish legend, now residing in Somerset, appeared exceptionally comfortable on the Butlin’s stage. He faced Germany’s top-ranked Martin Schindler, whose “Wall” proved unable to penetrate “The Flying Scotsman’s” formidable throw.
  • Danny Noppert: Following his Friday nine-dart heroics, “The Freeze” continued his strong form with a commanding victory over decorated Scotsman Peter Wright.
  • Daryl Gurney: “Superchin” also progressed after eventually overcoming Ross Smith in a fiercely competitive encounter.
  • Premier League Representatives: Stephen Bunting and Josh Rock likewise secured their places in the evening session, defeating Mensur Suljović and Dominik Gruellich respectively.
  • Other Advancements: Ireland’s Keane Barry produced an impressive display to defeat Ryan Joyce, and Krzysztof Ratajski, “The Polish Eagle,” ended the spirited run of Sweden’s Oskar Lukasiak.

Remarkably, all but one of the leading dozen players on the PDC Order of Merit remain in contention, with Gian van Veen being the sole high-ranking casualty. This leaves a field of extraordinary calibre still battling for Minehead glory as the tournament marches inexorably towards Sunday evening’s crowning moment.
