Darts sensation Danny Noppert faced an unexpected and severe challenge at the Austrian Darts Open, revealing he was on the verge of withdrawing due to a debilitating stomach bug. Despite constant discomfort and sleepless nights, ‘The Freeze’ battled through his opening match, demonstrating incredible resilience. Noppert shared details of his ongoing struggle, his unique dietary remedies, and his ambition to mirror the recent success of compatriot Wessel Nijman, all while fighting to regain his health on the ProTour.

A Grueling Opening Match

Darts professional Danny Noppert, known as “The Freeze,” has revealed the surprising and challenging reason why he almost didn’t compete at the recent Austrian Darts Open: a severe stomach bug. Speaking to DartsNews, Noppert admitted the illness led to constant visits to the toilet and left him feeling far from his best, casting serious doubt on his participation.

  • It’s been a battle the last couple of days. I’ve had such a bad stomach. I don’t know why. A lot of problems on the toilet and less sleep.
  • “There wasn’t a performance here tonight as well, but I’m happy that I won and I’m still fighting.”
  • “Yesterday I thought, ‘I can’t play today,’ but I’m still waiting for the moment where I feel good again.”
  • He noted that his stomach was “spinning around” initially, but he felt “a little bit better” after a few legs, though still far from well.

Noppert was scheduled to face Cristo Reyes, who had achieved a nine-dart finish the previous day, highlighting the tough competition he was up against while unwell.

No Stranger to Stomach Issues

This isn’t Noppert’s first encounter with such a debilitating stomach bug. He experienced similar problems earlier in the year, making this a recurring challenge for the Dutch darts star. His chosen method for recovery is a rather specific and consistent diet:

“Yes, of course, I’m having eggs and bananas to try and improve again. I don’t know why, but sometimes my stomach just doesn’t go my way.” This simple yet consistent approach is his attempt to stabilize his system and recover his strength.

Eyes on Future Success and Dutch Pride

Despite his ongoing health battle, Noppert remains fiercely determined to uphold the reputation of Dutch darts, much like his compatriot Wessel Nijman. Nijman has had an outstanding year, securing his fifth ProTour title just recently, a feat that has deeply impressed Noppert.

“What Wessel has been doing has been unbelievable,” Noppert stated, expressing his admiration.

Noppert is eager to replicate such success on the ProTour himself, even as he fights his personal health challenges. He acknowledged his recent performance but stressed his commitment to improvement:

“Hopefully I will find that range as well in the future, but when it happens, I don’t know. So far, not really, but like last week, one semi-final on the ProTour — it’s okay, but I will fight.”

Danny Noppert’s journey at the Austrian Open is a testament to his resilience, battling not only his opponents on the oche but also a formidable foe within. His dedication to his sport and his country remains unwavering as he seeks both recovery and renewed success.
