Wessel Nijman has once again proven his dominance on the PDC Pro Tour, securing his fourth title of the year at the Players Championship in Wigan. The Dutch sensation defeated the surprising finalist Scott Waites with a commanding 8-2 victory. While Nijman continued his winning streak, German players Daniel Klose and Gabriel Clemens both made it to the Last 16, showcasing promising performances amidst a field of top darting talent.

Wessel Nijman’s Unstoppable March to Victory

Wessel Nijman’s journey to his fourth Players Championship title of the season was nothing short of spectacular. His consistent high-level play saw him overcome a series of strong opponents, culminating in another impressive trophy for his collection.

  • Early Rounds: Nijman began his campaign with solid wins against Martin Lukeman (6-4), Justin Hood (6-2), and a dominant 6-0 whitewash over Adam Gawlas.
  • Mid-Tournament Momentum: He continued his strong form with a 6-3 victory over Niels Zonneveld.
  • Quarter-Final Masterclass: A standout moment was his 6-2 win against England’s Beau Greaves, where Nijman delivered an incredible 109 average. Greaves herself had a strong tournament, reaching the quarter-finals and solidifying her path towards World Championship qualification via the Pro Tour.
  • Semi-Final and Final: Nijman then secured a 7-4 victory over Luke Woodhouse to reach the final, where he faced Scott Waites.

In the final match, Nijman quickly established control, taking the first two legs in 16 and 15 darts. Despite Waites managing to win one leg, Nijman quickly reasserted his authority, winning five consecutive legs. He closed out the match with a 101.34 average, securing an emphatic 8-2 win and the £15,000 top prize.

Scott Waites: The Surprise Finalist

One of the biggest talking points of the tournament was the unexpected run of Scott Waites. Despite currently not holding a PDC Tour Card, “Scotty 2 Hotty” defied expectations to reach the final, showcasing his enduring talent and experience.

His impressive journey to the final was a testament to his skill, overcoming several seeded players along the way. While he ultimately fell short against the red-hot Nijman, his performance was a clear highlight, earning him a valuable £10,000 as the runner-up.

German Talent and Other Noteworthy Performances

Two German players, Daniel Klose and Gabriel Clemens, showed strong performances by reaching the Last 16:

  • Daniel Klose: Klose displayed incredible resilience, winning three consecutive matches 6-5 in deciding legs against Mickey Mansell, Daryl Gurney, and Charlie Manby. His 102 average against Daryl Gurney was particularly impressive. His run ended in the Last 16 against Chris Dobey.
  • Gabriel Clemens: “The German Giant” enjoyed a smoother path to the Last 16 with two whitewash victories against Niall Culleton and Wesley Plaisier. He then secured a tight 6-5 win over David Sharp before being whitewashed 0-6 by Kevin Doets.

Other players who made significant runs included Karel Sedlacek, who reached the semi-finals, and Joe Hunt, who made it to the quarter-finals, both exceeding expectations.

Several other German players, including Arno Merk, Dominik Grüllich, Ricardo Pietreczko, and Max Hopp, reached the second round, while Martin Schindler, Germany’s number one, unfortunately exited in the first round after missing a match dart against Beau Greaves.
