In a truly unforgettable final at the Dutch Open 2026, Germany’s Paul Krohne achieved the biggest win of his young career. Facing a daunting 2-0 deficit and surviving multiple match darts from opponent Corné Groeneveld, Krohne mounted an incredible comeback to clinch the title. This historic victory marks the first time a German player has won the open singles tournament at the prestigious Dutch Open.

The Road to the Final: A Battle of Titans

After four intense days of darts in Assen, the Dutch Open reached its thrilling climax: the open singles final. A massive field of 4096 players had been whittled down to just two competitors by Saturday and Sunday. Standing on the oche were Corné Groeneveld and Paul Krohne, ranked third and fourth respectively in the seeding list, ready to battle for the coveted top prize.

The match began with understandable nerves from both players in the opening leg, but the quality quickly escalated. The first set immediately turned into a decisive leg after Groeneveld secured legs in 15 and 16 darts. Both players had opportunities to seize the initial lead, but it was the Dutchman, Groeneveld, who successfully hit double four to take the crucial first set. Krohne, who had seemed almost unbeatable in flashes throughout the tournament, found himself outplayed by Groeneveld early on.

Groeneveld’s Dominance and the Turning Point

The German managed to win the first leg of the second set, but then Groeneveld went on a run, taking three consecutive legs. Displaying his class with impressive finishes of 80 and 106, the 35-year-old Dutchman firmly established a 2-0 lead in sets, seemingly putting him in an unassailable position.

At this point, the match appeared to be heading in only one direction, especially after Groeneveld secured a leg in the third set with a stunning 170-finish, putting him 2-1 up in that set. However, the momentum dramatically shifted when he reached match darts. Two crucial darts for the title vanished into thin air, and from that moment, Krohne inexplicably found another gear.

Krohne’s Unbelievable Comeback

The former tour card holder found double 16, and then, with a phenomenal 11-darter, he snatched the third set. The tension in the arena was palpable and complete. The comeback gained serious traction as the fourth set also fell to Krohne, his advantage growing with each throw. The decisive fifth set began with Krohne winning the first leg, further piling on the pressure.

Groeneveld seemed to shake off the previous blows with a 16-darter, but the final knockout punch was just two legs away. After the Dutchman narrowly missed a dart for a crucial break from 108, he could only watch as Krohne seized his opportunity and struck. The young German erupted in tears on stage, overwhelmed with emotion. For the very first time in the history of the Dutch Open, a darts player from Germany had won the open singles tournament.
