The Junior Darts Cooperation (JDC) utilizes a unique and highly effective training and ranking system known as the JDC Challenge. This ingenious game is specifically designed to assess and enhance a player’s performance across all critical facets of darts, including scoring accuracy and clinical finishing around the entire dartboard.

What is the JDC Challenge?

Every week, thousands of players at JDC Academies worldwide dedicate 15-20 minutes to complete a single session of the JDC Challenge. Their scores are meticulously recorded online by official scorekeepers, allowing the JDC to establish a global ranking and handicapping system. This ensures fair and exciting competition for players of all skill levels.

If you’re serious about consistently monitoring your darts performance and identifying areas for improvement, the JDC Challenge is an invaluable tool. It provides a clear roadmap to becoming a truly well-rounded darts player.

How the JDC Challenge Works: Three Crucial Stages

The challenge is divided into three distinct stages, each designed to test a specific aspect of your game:

Stage 1: Precision Scoring (Numbers 10-15)

This initial stage focuses on accuracy and strategic scoring. Players throw three darts at each number from 10 to 15 in sequence. The key rule here is that you only score points if your dart hits the specific section you are aiming for. For example, if you’re aiming for 12, and you hit T12, S5, S12, you would score 48 points (T12 = 36, S12 = 12, S5 does not count because it’s not the target number).

Adding an exciting twist, this stage incorporates a “Shanghai” bonus. If you manage to hit all three sections of your target number (Single, Double, and Triple – e.g., S12-D12-T12) with your three darts, you earn a substantial 100-point bonus!

Stage 2: Pressure Doubles (Finishing)

Next, it’s time to test your nerve and finishing prowess. This stage simulates real match conditions by giving you only one dart at each double in succession (D1, D2, D3, and so on). This intense pressure scenario is crucial for developing clutch finishing skills.

  • Each successful hit on a double adds 50 points to your total score.
  • Hitting the bullseye (center of the board) is worth a generous 100 points.

Stage 3: Power Scoring (Higher Numbers)

After the finishing test, the challenge returns to power scoring, this time focusing on the higher, more challenging numbers (typically 16-20 and bullseye, though the specific numbers may vary slightly by academy). Like Stage 1, you only score when you hit your intended target. And once again, nailing a “Shanghai” finish (Single, Double, Triple of the target number) awards you a fantastic 100-point bonus! This final round offers a significant opportunity to boost your overall score through consistent accuracy.

Your Darts Ranking: The JDC Colour Levels

Once all three stages are complete, your final score is tallied. Much like belts in martial arts, your score will correspond to a specific coloured ‘level’. These levels signify a standard of play, providing an approximate guide to your competitive ability in darts.

Examples of these levels include:

  • Yellow Level: Often beginners, starting X01 games (e.g., 401) and finishing on the GreenZone.
  • Green Level: Intermediate players, starting X01 games (e.g., 501) and finishing on the GreenZone.
  • Red Level: Advanced players, starting X01 games (e.g., 501) and finishing on a traditional double.

The GreenZone: Making Darts Accessible and Exciting

To further increase enjoyment and inclusivity for beginners and younger players, the JDC employs a unique handicapping system centered around the “GreenZone.” This is an enlarged outer bullseye area that provides an alternative way to finish matches, especially for those less likely to consistently hit a specific double.

How the GreenZone Works:

  • A player must first score enough points to reduce their total score to zero or below.
  • Crucially, there is no bust rule for players finishing on the GreenZone. For example, if a player has 4 points remaining and hits a Single 18, their score validly reduces to -14.
  • Once their score is at zero or below, the player can then win the game by landing a dart anywhere in the GreenZone.

This innovative handicap system provides the thrill of competition for everyone, ensuring that even new players can experience the excitement of winning a match.

JDC Tournaments: Fair Play for All Levels

In practice, JDC tournaments are carefully structured to ensure fair competition. Players of a certain colour level are typically grouped together, playing under the same X01 starting scores and finishing rules tailored to their skill. However, event organizers have the flexibility to mix and match levels, creating dynamic and engaging competitions. For instance, Yellow, Green, and Red level players can compete in the same event, with each group adhering to their specific rules (e.g., Yellow starting at 401 and finishing on GreenZone, Green at 501 and finishing on GreenZone, and Red at 501 and finishing on a traditional double). This adaptability maximizes enjoyment and learning for all participants.
