Luke Humphries, the world number three, made a stunning return to competitive darts at Players Championship 33, clinching his fourth title of 2026 despite recently withdrawing from the European Championship due to injury. His dominant performance, marked by exceptional averages and decisive wins, not only solidified his top-tier status but also significantly impacted the crucial qualification races for both the Players Championship Finals and the coveted World Darts Championship. The event also saw impressive runs from Niels Zonneveld, who reached the final, and strong showings from darts legends like Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson, adding layers of drama and high-stakes competition to the tournament.

Humphries’ Dominant Path to a Fourth Title

Making his first appearance since a European Championship injury withdrawal, Luke Humphries immediately asserted his authority at the Mattioli Arena. The 31-year-old showcased incredible form from the outset, beginning with a routine 6-2 win over 16-year-old Archie Self.

He then delivered back-to-back whitewash victories, defeating Darius Labanauskas 6-0 with a 106 average, followed by another 6-0 triumph over Tom Bissell, where he averaged an astonishing 110. This set the tone for a relentless campaign.

Humphries continued his impressive run with consecutive 6-2 wins against Steve Lennon and former World Champion Gerwyn Price, effortlessly securing his spot in the semi-finals. There, he faced two-time World Champion Gary Anderson in an epic encounter. Despite Anderson boasting a formidable 106.75 average, Humphries prevailed 7-4 in a match where seven of the 11 legs went against the throw, demonstrating his exceptional composure under pressure.

In the final, Humphries quickly established control against Niels Zonneveld, racing to a 3-1 lead thanks to a pair of 12-dart breaks of throw. Although Zonneveld fought valiantly, he couldn’t close the early deficit. Humphries sealed his classy 8-4 victory with an 11-dart hold, ending the match with an impressive 103.77 average.

A Champion’s Reflection: Ambition and Legacy

Speaking after securing his third PDC Players Championship win at the Mattioli Arena this year, Humphries expressed surprise at his consistent performance, especially given his recent health issues.

“The way I’ve been the last few weeks, it’s an unexpected win for myself,” Humphries admitted. “It was more about coming back and seeing what my energy levels were like, because I’ve been very ill the past few weeks. I’d never miss a major if I could play. I was devastated. I was on a good run after winning the World Grand Prix.”

Reflecting on his remarkable year, he added, “Four Players Championship wins, a Euro Tour, the World Grand Prix, a win on the World Series, I’ve done some good things this year. I think my yearly average is better than it’s ever been.”

Despite his numerous successes, Humphries remains hungry for more, setting his sights on the sport’s biggest prizes. “I still want to win another major. If it’s not the Grand Slam or Players Championship Finals, then I want it to be the World Championship,” he declared. “That’s the thing I really search for now, is to try and put my name in the legacy of some of the greatest there has ever been. I am far away from that yet, so I need to try and win a lot more.”

Zonneveld’s Journey to the Final

Niels Zonneveld put together a fantastic run, reaching his second PDC ranking final of 2026. He began his campaign strongly with a hat-trick of 6-4 victories, including a superb performance against Jack Aldridge where he averaged an impressive 107.14.

The recently crowned Dutch Darts Champion then navigated a challenging path, overcoming three of his compatriots to reach the final. His route included a comfortable 6-1 win over Jeffrey de Zwaan, a 6-4 victory against Dirk van Duijvenbode, and a significant 7-5 triumph over darts legend Michael van Gerwen in their semi-final clash.

Tournament Highlights and Qualification Drama

Players Championship 33 was packed with other memorable performances and crucial developments in the race for major tournament qualification:

  • Michael van Gerwen reminded everyone of his immense talent with a staggering 114.15 average in his quarter-final whitewash of Danny Noppert. He advanced to the semi-finals but was ultimately stopped by Zonneveld.
