From Health Battles to Darts Glory: Jack Tweddell’s Incredible Comeback Story
This year, DartsWorld proudly celebrates Jack Tweddell, the recipient of the 2025/26 Amateur Player of the Year award. His journey is a true testament to resilience: after stepping away from professional darts in 2018 due to severe health complications, Tweddell made a remarkable comeback. Overcoming a slow start in 2025, he secured a major tour title and ultimately triumphed at the ADC Global Championship, winning £60,000 and a prestigious trophy. This award highlights DartsWorld’s commitment to recognizing outstanding achievements beyond the professional circuit, marking the launch of its inaugural annual awards.
A Champion Forged in Adversity
The world of darts extends far beyond the bright lights of the PDC, and at DartsWorld, we’ve always been dedicated to celebrating the vast array of talent and achievements found in every corner of the sport. It’s in this spirit that we proudly introduce our first-ever DartsWorld Amateur Player of the Year.
While defining an “amateur player” can be nuanced, there’s no doubt that our inaugural winner embodies the spirit of an independent competitor who has achieved extraordinary success. Jack Tweddell, a 30-year-old talent, has long been recognized for his immense potential, even reaching a PDC World Youth quarter-final early in his career.
The Unforeseen Hiatus and a Powerful Return
However, detailed records show that Tweddell seemed to withdraw from the formal darts scene in 2018, despite reaching the later stages of Challenge Tour events that year. Further investigation revealed a challenging personal battle: the Swindon thrower faced serious health complications. It was only during a second period of recuperation that he rediscovered his passion and began throwing darts once more. His journey back to the oche is a remarkable story of rehabilitation and determination.
The Road to Glory: A Season of Breakthroughs
The path wasn’t immediately easy upon his return. He missed the cut at Q School in 2025, and the initial Challenge Tour events didn’t signal a transformative comeback. But then, something shifted. Tweddell embarked on a phenomenal run of late-stage performances, culminating in securing a first-tier tour title. This achievement not only earned him coveted call-ups to the Pro Tour but also put him in contention for a spot at the prestigious Ally Pally.
Yet, fate had an even grander plan. Instead of pushing for Ally Pally, Tweddell opted to focus on the ADC’s Global Championship, an event for which he had already qualified. On January 4th, 2026, his dedication paid off spectacularly. He became the second winner of this rapidly growing event, pocketing a life-changing £60,000 and lifting his first truly prestigious trophy!
It is with immense pride that DartsWorld names Jack Tweddell as our Amateur Player of The Year for the 2025/26 Season.
Introducing the DartsWorld Awards: Celebrating Excellence
For half a century, DartsWorld has been at the forefront of championing darts – its players, its achievements, and its global progress. For a significant portion of that time, we’ve considered establishing more formal acknowledgments, much like annual awards, to truly celebrate the sport.
The time for consideration is over. We believe that a project discussed indefinitely remains just that – a discussion. To forge a truly useful and celebratory tradition, an initial step must be taken. And so, we proudly launch our inaugural DartsWorld Awards.
A Spectrum of Darting Endeavours
Our first awards showcase nine distinct accolades that span a wide spectrum of darting achievements from the 2025/26 season, which concluded with the crowning of a new World Champion in January. From professional excellence to amateur triumphs, and from elite performance to charitable contributions, these awards aim to truly live up to our name, DartsWorld.
How Winners Are Chosen
For this inaugural year, our selection process is not yet a fully open and democratic one. Instead, we have gathered insights and nominations from those directly connected with DartsWorld:
- Players
- Writers
- Analysts
- Business leaders
These respected individuals have contributed to award categories and the selection of our eventual winners.
Key Guidelines for the Awards
We’ve established a few self-imposed guidelines, which, much like a pirate’s code, are more a set of guiding principles than strict rules. The most important rule, which explains any apparent surprises, is simple:
- No player will receive more than one award each year.
The Future of the DartsWorld Awards
We are committed to developing the DartsWorld Awards over time. Our goal is for them to be announced earlier each new year, potentially becoming part of a special occasion, event, or dedicated magazine issue. In the meantime, we sincerely hope you enjoy discovering all the DartsWorld Awards for 2025/26.
To learn about the other eight inaugural winners and for more in-depth stories, be sure to follow DartsWorld’s official channels and look out for our upcoming publications. Don’t miss out on celebrating the best of darts!
