Zonneveld emerged victorious from an all-Dutch clash against Richard Veenstra, winning 6-4, and will now face second seed James Wade. Doets displayed impressive form to defeat Lukas Wenig 6-3, setting up an exciting encounter with Nathan Aspinall.

Zonneveld Conquers Fellow Dutchman Veenstra in Tense Opener

The Baltic Sea Darts Open in Kiel kicked off with an intriguing all-Dutch encounter on Friday evening, as Niels Zonneveld faced Richard Veenstra. Zonneveld started the stronger of the two, quickly establishing a 2-0 lead with impressive legs in 17 and 16 darts. Veenstra managed to get on the scoreboard in the third leg, holding his throw after Zonneveld missed opportunities to extend his lead further.

The next three legs saw both players hold their throws, with Zonneveld executing a crucial 96-finish while Veenstra waited on a double. With the score at 4-2, Zonneveld again had a chance to pull away, but missed two darts at tops, allowing Veenstra to hold and stay in the match. Despite Veenstra’s resilience, he couldn’t secure the crucial break back. The remaining three legs all went with the throw, culminating in a 6-4 victory for Niels Zonneveld.

Zonneveld, known as ‘Triple Z’, now advances to a formidable second-round clash on Saturday evening against the tournament’s second seed, James Wade.

Doets Dominates Wenig, Sets Up Aspinall Showdown

Following the Dutch derby, fellow countryman Kevin Doets took to the stage in Kiel. His opponent, Lukas Wenig, started spectacularly, breaking Doets’ throw in the very first leg. However, Wenig’s lead was short-lived as Doets immediately broke back with a stunning 13-darter. He then followed this up with a 14-darter and a 66-finish to seize control of the match, leading 3-1.

The German crowd was then treated to a moment of magic as Wenig hit a magnificent 170-finish to break straight back. A leg later, Wenig had seven darts at a double to consolidate his break but failed to convert, allowing Doets to break once more in 19 darts, making the score 4-2. The final three legs all went with the throw, with ‘Hawkeye’ Doets sealing his 6-3 victory with an emphatic 11-darter.

Kevin Doets now faces another challenging opponent in the second round: Nathan Aspinall, promising an exciting tie on Saturday night.
