Dutch darts sensation Niels Zonneveld kicked off his weekend at the International Darts Open in Riesa with a dominant victory over Keane Barry. However, it wasn’t a clean sweep for the Dutch contingent, as fellow countrymen Jeffrey Sparidaans and Maik Kuivenhoven both faced early exits from the tournament. Zonneveld’s strong form continues, while Sparidaans and Kuivenhoven will look to bounce back from their challenging performances.

Zonneveld’s Stellar Start: A Masterclass in Riesa

Niels Zonneveld, affectionately known as ‘Triple Z’, is enjoying a remarkable year on the European Tour. Currently ranked ninth after six of fifteen tournaments, he arrived in Riesa eager to extend his impressive run. For the third time this year, Zonneveld found himself facing Keane Barry in a first-round stage match, and for the second time, it was the Dutchman who emerged victorious.

Zonneveld wasted no time asserting his dominance, swiftly claiming the first four legs. Though ‘Dynamite’ Barry managed to stage a brief comeback by winning two legs, he couldn’t sustain the challenge. Zonneveld closed out the match with style, hitting a 100-finish for a 14-darter and a 98-finish for a 12-darter. The final score stood at a convincing 6-2 in Zonneveld’s favor, backed by a strong average of 96.47 for the world number 37.

Tough Breaks for Sparidaans and Kuivenhoven

Earlier in the afternoon, the fortunes of Jeffrey Sparidaans and Maik Kuivenhoven took a different turn.

Sparidaans Undone by Joyce’s Strong Form

Jeffrey Sparidaans faced Ryan Joyce in the opening match and found himself up against a formidable opponent. Joyce delivered a powerful performance, recording an average just shy of 100. This strong showing from Joyce ultimately led to a 6-2 defeat for Sparidaans, who struggled to match his opponent’s consistency.

Kuivenhoven’s Challenge Against Resurgent Pietreczko

Maik Kuivenhoven, who traveled to Riesa as a reserve player, initially seemed to have a favorable draw against Ricardo Pietreczko. The German, known as ‘Pikachu’, has been in a significant slump and has also been battling dartitis – a psychological condition similar to ‘the yips’ in golf, where players struggle with the smooth release of their darts, often leading to involuntary movements or freezing. However, Pietreczko showcased a remarkable recovery. He made a substantial adjustment to his throwing technique, reportedly drawing inspiration from darts legend Co Stompé, and his form appeared to be on the mend.

Unfortunately for Kuivenhoven, he failed to find his best game, compounding the challenge of facing a revitalized Pietreczko. As a result, Kuivenhoven had to accept a 6-2 defeat, marking an early exit from the tournament.
