The Austrian Darts Open has delivered its share of drama, with Dutch stars Michael van Gerwen and Danny Noppert securing their places on Finals Day. Van Gerwen showcased his dominant form with a superb comeback, while Noppert survived a nail-biting encounter. However, the biggest shock came from top seed Gian van Veen, who, despite high expectations, suffered another disappointing early exit. Get ready for an action-packed Sunday in Graz, featuring some of the sport’s biggest names.

Michael van Gerwen’s Masterclass: “Mighty Mike” Charges On

Michael van Gerwen kicked off his Austrian Darts Open campaign in spectacular fashion, demonstrating why he remains one of darts’ most formidable players. Facing Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski, Van Gerwen quickly found himself trailing 2-0. Undeterred, “Mighty Mike” unleashed a barrage of high scoring and clinical finishing to turn the tide dramatically.

He ultimately secured a dominant 6-3 victory, highlighting his class with three remarkable finishes over 100:

  • A stunning 121 checkout
  • An impressive 128 finish
  • A magnificent 137 checkout

Van Gerwen concluded the match with an outstanding average of 103, setting him up for a thrilling last-16 clash on Sunday afternoon against England’s Rob Cross.

Danny Noppert’s Great Escape: “The Freeze” Survives a Thriller

Danny Noppert experienced a far more tense journey into Finals Day. In his opening match on Saturday evening, the Dutchman had to dig deep against Scotland’s Alan Soutar. Noppert found himself in a precarious position, trailing 3-1 at one point.

However, “The Freeze” showed incredible resilience, leveling the match with crucial 14- and 15-dart legs. The contest ultimately went to a nerve-wracking deciding leg. Soutar, starting the leg, appeared to have the advantage, reaching a finish after just nine darts. Yet, the pressure proved too much, and the Scot agonizingly missed three match darts.

Seizing the opportunity, Noppert stepped up and coolly dispatched double 6 to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. This dramatic win propels him into a Sunday afternoon showdown with Spain’s Cristo Reyes, who earlier in the day made headlines by throwing a perfect nine-dart finish in Graz.

Gian van Veen’s Recurring Nightmare: Top Seed Tumbles Again

For Gian van Veen, the story of being a top-seeded player on the European Tour continues to be a frustrating one. Despite being the number one seed, he once again failed to make a significant impact, crashing out in his very first match of the weekend against Latvia’s Madars Razma.

The match was a tight affair, eventually culminating in an eleventh and deciding leg. The first six legs went with the throw, but Razma secured the first break of the match in the seventh leg. Van Veen immediately responded with two consecutive 14-dart legs to regain the lead. Razma then held his throw with an 80 checkout, forcing the decider.

In the crucial eleventh leg, Van Veen struggled to hit the vital treble numbers, giving Razma the chance to break. The Latvian capitalized, sealing a 6-5 victory with an 18-dart break of throw. This marks the third consecutive European Tour event where “The Giant” has faced an early exit as a seeded player, making for another deeply disappointing weekend.
