The MODUS Super Series Women’s Week delivered a thrilling Friday of darts action, as players battled fiercely for a coveted spot in Saturday’s final. After two days of intense competition, five more players emerged victorious from Groups B and C, securing their places alongside Group A winner Rhian O’Sullivan.
Group C: Viinikainen and Steenbergen Lead the Charge
Group C saw some exceptional performances, with Kirsi Viinikainen ultimately topping the standings. Having already accumulated 6 points on the opening day, Viinikainen continued her strong form, winning three of her five matches on Friday. Her impressive victories against Vicky Pruim, Robyn Byrne, and Lorraine Hyde propelled her to a total of 12 points out of a possible 20. Despite defeats to Sophie McKinlay and Priscilla Steenbergen, her overall performance was enough to secure the top spot.
Following closely behind, Priscilla Steenbergen also secured her spot in the finale by finishing 2nd overall, matching Viinikainen’s 12 points. Steenbergen demonstrated consistent play throughout the group, ensuring her progression to the next stage.
The competition was incredibly tight for the remaining spots, with Vicky Pruim, Sophie McKinlay, and Lorraine Hyde all finishing on 10 points. However, only the top two could advance. Robyn Byrne finished bottom of the group with 6 points.
Group B: Ashton Dominates, Sherrock and Hayter Advance
Group B provided its own share of drama and high-level play. Lisa Ashton proved to be the dominant force, topping the group with an impressive 14 points out of a possible 16. Ashton won three of her four matches on Friday evening, securing decisive victories against Gemma Hayter, Lorraine Winstanley, and Laura Turner. Her only defeat came against the formidable Fallon Sherrock, showcasing the high caliber of play in the group.
Joining Ashton in the final are Fallon Sherrock and Gemma Hayter. Sherrock finished 2nd overall with 12 points, demonstrating her customary flair and determination. Hayter claimed the final qualification spot, finishing 3rd with 6 points. Her progression was particularly nail-biting, as she edged out Lorraine Winstanley, who also finished on 6 points, but missed out on the final due to an inferior leg difference. This means that although they had the same number of points, Hayter won more individual ‘legs’ (mini-games within a match) across all her matches, giving her the tie-break advantage. Laura Turner finished bottom of Group B with 2 points.
The Finalists Are Set for Glory!
With Friday’s intense battles concluded, the stage is now set for an exhilarating finale. The six qualified players will return on Saturday to battle it out for the ultimate prize in the MODUS Super Series Women’s Week. Darts fans can expect a spectacular display of skill and nerves of steel as these top athletes compete for glory.
