The WDF Europe Cup Youth in Limerick, Ireland, witnessed an incredible display of young darting talent, with Germany’s Merve Hummel emerging as a standout star. Hummel secured an impressive double gold, winning both the Girls’ Singles title and, alongside Panagiota Kentzidou, the Girls’ Doubles championship. While Scotland dominated the Boys’ categories, claiming both the Singles and Team titles, Hummel’s historic victories marked a significant triumph for Germany, making her the first German girl to win a European Youth Singles title since 2007.

Germany’s Golden Girl: Merve Hummel’s Double Triumph

The spotlight shone brightly on 16-year-old German sensation Merve Hummel, who delivered a performance for the ages. Her journey to two gold medals was nothing short of spectacular.

Girls’ Singles: European Youth Champion

Merve Hummel’s path to the Girls’ Singles title was paved with skill and determination. After navigating through the knockout stages, defeating opponents like Hanna Rábközi (4-1) and Ruby Grey (4-3), she truly hit her stride.

  • In the quarterfinals, Hummel delivered a stunning performance against Paige Pauling, winning 4-0 with an excellent 76-average.
  • She continued her dominant form in the semi-final, beating Marta Roga 4-0.
  • The grand finale saw Hummel face Ireland’s Rebecca Allen, where she secured a resounding 5-1 victory to claim the European Youth Championship.

This remarkable achievement marks a historic moment for German darts, as it’s the first German girls’ singles victory since Jenny Lieverkus won in 2007.

Girls’ Doubles: A Comeback for the Ages

Merve Hummel wasn’t done yet. Teaming up with fellow German Panagiota Kentzidou, the duo embarked on a thrilling journey in the Girls’ Doubles competition.

  • Their campaign began with two dominant 4-0 victories against teams from Lithuania and Belgium.
  • The semi-final presented their toughest challenge yet, pitting them against the highly fancied English pair, Paige Pauling and Ruby Grey.
  • Despite falling behind 0-3, Hummel and Kentzidou showed incredible resilience, fighting back to win four consecutive legs and secure their spot in the final.
  • In the final, they faced Amanda Kirilova and Marta Roga from Latvia. The match was tightly contested, level at 3-3, until Merve Hummel stepped up to hit the double 16 to seal a 5-3 victory and their second gold medal.

Panagiota Kentzidou also made it to the Last 32 in the Girls’ Singles, narrowly missing out on match darts.

Scottish Dominance in the Boys’ Categories

While Germany celebrated its girls’ success, Scotland showcased overwhelming strength in the boys’ events.

Boys’ Singles: Mitchell Lawrie Crowned Champion

The Boys’ Singles field, featuring 108 participants, saw WDF World Championship finalist Mitchell Lawrie of Scotland live up to his reputation.

  • Lawrie demonstrated exceptional form throughout the tournament, including a phenomenal 103-average against Christian Ennis.
  • He ultimately secured the title with a convincing 6-1 win over Jason Goossens (Belgium) in the final.

Four German boys reached the Round of 16, with Raphael Küther and Nicardo Pieper notably making strong runs before being eliminated.

Boys’ Team Event: Scotland Triumphs Again

Scotland continued its winning streak by clinching the Boys’ Team competition. They emerged victorious in a hard-fought final against England, winning 9-7. Both teams consistently delivered the highest averages throughout the event, proving their dominance. Belgium and the Netherlands shared third place. The German team put up a strong fight in their Round of 16 match against the Netherlands, but ultimately lost 7-9 after conceding the final two legs.

Boys’ Doubles: England Breaks the Scottish Streak

The only boys’ event not won by Scotland was the Doubles. England’s Jack Nankervis and Mason Teese prevented a complete Scottish sweep by defeating Mitchell Lawrie and Owen Bryceland 5-4 in a thrilling final. Irish and Northern Irish pairs also reached the semi-finals. For Germany, both doubles pairs – Nicardo Pieper & Bela Janas, and Cedric Gerlach & Raphael Küther – were eliminated in the Round of 16.

Other Key Competitions: Girls’ Team and Irish Matchplay

Girls’ Team Event: Turkey Takes Gold

The Girls’ Team competition was won by the Turkish duo of Zehra Gemi and Aysegül Karagöz, who defeated Ireland 3-1 in the final. The German team, despite Merve Hummel winning both her legs, narrowly missed out on a medal, losing to England in the quarterfinals.

Irish Matchplay: An Open Ranking Event

Alongside the Europe Cup Youth, the Irish Matchplay, an open WDF world-ranking tournament for youth, was also held.

  • In the Boys’ category, Kai Burger from the Netherlands secured the title with a 5-1 win over Scott Doyle. Austria’s Luca Wallner had a commendable run, reaching the semi-finals, while Germany’s Raphael Küther made it to the Last 32.
  • The Girls’ final was a rematch between two stars of the Europe Cup Youth: Rebecca Allen (Ireland) and Merve Hummel (Germany). Allen managed to turn the tables this time, winning 4-3 despite Hummel having several match darts. Panagiota Kentzidou reached fifth place in this event.

This event provided another exciting platform for young talent to compete and gain valuable ranking points, showcasing the depth of youth darts across Europe.
