A Historic Start in Graz
The Stadthalle Graz proudly opened its doors for the very first time to host the Austrian Darts Open, the sixth prestigious Euro Tour event of the season. Darts fans were treated to an action-packed opening day, filled with drama and high-stakes matches.
Joyce Makes History as First Winner
It was Ryan Joyce who carved his name into the tournament’s history books, becoming the inaugural winner at this brand-new venue. ‘Relentless’ defeated Gabriel Clemens in a match where neither player truly found their top form. Despite a tight start, with the score locked at 3-3, the Englishman pulled away decisively to secure his victory. Joyce, whose best Euro Tour run this season was a quarter-final in Belgium, will be aiming to surpass that achievement as he prepares to face Mike De Decker in the next round.
Upsets and Close Calls
The opening day was not without its shocks and nail-biting finishes:
- Pietreczko’s Injury Woes Continue: All eyes were on Ricardo ‘Pikachu’ Pietreczko, fresh off an injury that forced a mid-match concession at a recent Players Championship. Despite what seemed like a favorable draw against East European qualifier Patrik Kovacs, it was the Hungarian who emerged victorious. While not a classic in terms of quality or pace, Kovacs will be thrilled to advance, knowing he faces a tough challenge against Josh Rock on Saturday evening.
- Heartbreak for Hurrell: James ‘Hillbilly’ Hurrell’s quest for a maiden Euro Tour victory was agonizingly extended. He was edged out in a thrilling encounter by Niels Zonneveld. The decisive moment came when the Dutchman produced a magnificent 135 checkout under immense pressure to snatch victory. Zonneveld now moves on to face last year’s runner-up, Ross Smith.
Mixed Fortunes for Favorites
Some established players had to dig deep, while others showed their class:
- Gilding Grinds It Out: Andrew ‘Goldfinger’ Gilding, known for his explosive scoring (including a colossal 118+ average recently), registered a surprisingly low 80 average here. Fortunately, his Host Nation Qualifier opponent, Nick Zwittnigg, struggled even more. Gilding secured the win, but will almost certainly need to find his ‘extra gears’ when he takes on Jermaine Wattimena in Saturday afternoon’s opening match.
- O’Connor’s Borrowed Darts Triumph: William ‘The Magpie’ O’Connor faced an unusual challenge: his equipment went missing en route to Graz! Undeterred, he borrowed darts from fellow player Cameron Menzies and still managed a relatively comfortable win against Anton Ostlund. The Irishman will be hoping his own arrows arrive before his formidable clash with Rob Cross.
Setting Up Blockbuster Second Rounds
The first day’s results have paved the way for some truly exciting matchups:
- Ratajski vs. Van Gerwen Rematch: Krzysztof ‘The Polish Eagle’ Ratajski arrived in Graz brimming with confidence after reaching the semi-finals in his last two Euro Tour events. He comfortably overcame Austrian qualifier Aaron Hardy. However, he’ll need to sharpen his finishing when he faces the legendary Michael van Gerwen on Saturday. Ratajski recently defeated MVG in a floor event, but ‘Mighty Mike’ boasts an incredible five Austrian Darts Open titles and knows how to perform on this stage.
- Springer’s Super Checkouts: Niko ‘Meenzer Bub’ Springer defied his usual Friday afternoon form, delivering a strong performance against Nick Kenny. Thanks to three clinical ton-plus checkouts, including a monstrous 167 finish, Springer secured his win. He now faces serial title winner Wessel Nijman, a match where he’ll need to significantly raise his game for a chance at Sunday’s finals.
- Doets’ Winning Wave Continues: Kevin ‘Hawkeye’ Doets continued his impressive form, riding high after securing his maiden Pro Tour title earlier in the week. He stormed to a commanding 5-1 lead against fellow Dutchman Chris Landman and, despite a brief comeback from Landman, sealed the victory shortly after. His reward? A challenging encounter with the formidable Ryan Searle.
The stage is now set for an even more thrilling second day, promising more darts drama and unforgettable moments in Graz!
