Cameron Menzies is set to achieve a lifelong dream, representing Scotland at the World Cup of Darts alongside his childhood hero, Gary Anderson. After a career marked by dramatic ups and downs, Menzies’ journey to this prestigious event is extraordinary. He’s remarkably calm for now, but expects nerves to kick in soon. This moment places him among an elite group of Scottish darts legends. His partnership with the cool-headed Anderson, despite their contrasting personalities, is seen as a key strength. Menzies attributes his recent resurgence, after even considering retirement, to hypnotherapy and a more stable personal life, making him optimistic about Scotland’s chances to contend for the trophy.
A Dream Realized: Menzies Joins the Scottish Elite
This week marks a monumental occasion for Cameron Menzies as he prepares to don the dark blue of Scotland, stepping onto the oche in Frankfurt alongside none other than his childhood idol, two-time world champion Gary Anderson. For a player whose professional path has often been as unpredictable as a roller coaster, this opportunity represents yet another remarkable chapter in one of darts’ most unique careers.
Surprisingly, the Ayrshire thrower admits he hasn’t been overwhelmed by the magnitude of the event just yet. However, he fully expects the nerves to arrive once he boards the plane for Germany.
“I’m quite fine at the moment, which is quite surprising,” Menzies shared. “A bit nervous and excited to finally get to put the shirt on. But yeah, quite fine because we’re busy this week and I don’t fly out until Friday, so I’ll start getting nervous on Friday when I’m flying over.”
Joining the Legends: A Legacy in the Making
The importance of his selection is not lost on Menzies. He becomes only the fifth player to represent modern Scotland, following in the formidable footsteps of legends who have become almost revered figures in Scottish darts history.
“The four players who have played for Scotland before me are all pillars of the game in Scotland,” Menzies stated, expressing his ambition. “So hopefully one day I can be named in the same breath as them.”
An Unlikely Alliance: Fire and Ice on the Oche
Should chemistry prove more valuable than statistics, Scotland might possess a particularly intriguing combination. Menzies and Anderson are almost polar opposites in temperament. Menzies is known for his passionate, often emotional, displays, while Anderson maintains a famously calm and collected demeanor.
“Gary is pretty much the exact opposite to me as a player,” Menzies explained. “I think that’s where it might work, because Gary will just throw his darts, basically, and that’s it. If I make a mistake, Gary will be quite calm about it, no matter what. If I play well, Gary will be calm. If I play bad, Gary will be calm.”
The pair have already shared light-hearted moments away from the dartboard, with Anderson seemingly taking on the role of a watchful mentor.
“We all sat at the table and stuff. And he was telling me to behave,” Menzies chuckled, acknowledging his partner’s influence. Given Menzies’ well-documented emotional tendencies, this partnership could be incredibly complementary. “If I get too emotional, too hyper, then he’ll just clip me around the ears and tell me to calm down.”
From Crisis to Comeback: The Power of Hypnotherapy
Despite some challenging months earlier this year, during which Menzies openly contemplated stepping away from the game entirely, the Scot revealed that significant improvements in his personal life and the use of hypnotherapy have helped him rediscover his balance and passion.
“I’ve been doing some hypnotherapy and stuff, which has helped me a lot,” he confirmed. “I feel like my darts is getting a lot better. My life’s getting a bit more settled as well, which is a massive thing.”
Indeed, matters had become so bleak that Menzies had even started preparing for a career outside of darts.
“I even started my CV again, that’s how bad it was,” he admitted. Fortunately, those retirement plans have been put on hold, and a renewed sense of optimism has returned.
“I’m definitely feeling better now than I did about three or four months ago, massively,” Menzies affirmed.
Eyeing the Prize: Scotland’s World Cup Ambitions
As for expectations in Germany, Menzies sees no reason why Scotland cannot become genuine contenders for the title.
“I feel like if Gary plays the way he usually does, and I find my A game, we could be a team that would be hard to beat if we start playing well,” he confidently stated.
For now, though, the greatest challenge for the lively Menzies might simply be remaining in his hotel room between matches, a lighthearted concern shared by his partner.
“I think Gary will tell me to go to my bed and put a lock on my door, so I can’t get out, because he knows what I’m like,” Menzies joked, highlighting the dynamic between the two.
Given the contrasting personalities involved, this promises to be one of the tournament’s most fascinating alliances. One man radiates serenity, the other occasionally appears to experience every conceivable human emotion within the space of a single visit to the oche. Yet, in doubles darts, a unique blend of personalities often produces magnificent and unexpected outcomes. Should Scotland lift the trophy, Cameron Menzies may finally discover that sometimes the most improbable equations generate the most extraordinary solutions.
