Michael Unterbuchner, known as “T-Rex,” delivered a significant upset by defeating William O’Connor, while Joe Cullen secured a pivotal win to face the tournament’s top seed. We also saw former champion Peter Wright exit early, and impressive displays from Cameron Menzies, Kim Huybrechts, and Oskar Lukasiak. Get ready for an action-packed weekend as the remaining contenders clash!

Giants Tumble: Unexpected Upsets Rock the Grand Prix

The European Darts Grand Prix kicked off with a bang, as the afternoon and evening sessions were both marked by surprising outcomes. Favorites found themselves challenged, and some even sent packing.

One of the most notable upsets saw local hero Michael Unterbuchner, affectionately known as “T-Rex,” defy expectations by defeating the highly-rated William O’Connor. Despite O’Connor being a two-time Euro Tour finalist, Unterbuchner, performing on familiar German soil, delivered a composed and assured display to secure only his second career victory on this circuit. The match went the full distance, with the Munich-born thrower emerging as a thoroughly deserving victor. His reward? A daunting second-round clash against the formidable Dutch superstar, Michael van Gerwen.

Cullen Sets Up Marquee Clash, Wright Exits Early

Former Masters Champion Joe Cullen, “Rockstar,” also navigated his way into the second round with a victory over Maik Kuivenhoven. While the scoreline appeared comfortable, the contest had a precarious moment when Kuivenhoven missed an opportunity to narrow the gap. Cullen capitalized ruthlessly, seizing control and setting up a high-profile encounter against the tournament’s top seed.

However, not all champions were as fortunate. Another former tournament winner, Peter Wright, “Snakebite,” was dismissed by Jeffrey De Zwaan, “The Black Cobra.” This exit, combined with earlier losses from Rob Cross and Ian White, and other past champions being absent, significantly thins the field of previous winners. At the close of play, only a select few remained:

  • Gary Anderson
  • Michael van Gerwen
  • Kim Huybrechts

Facing Wright in his current form can be unpredictable, and on this occasion, De Zwaan encountered a subdued version of the decorated Scotsman. Despite an even contest at the halfway point, De Zwaan demonstrated sufficient composure and precision to secure the win and earn a meeting with Nathan Aspinall.

Dominant Displays and Breakthrough Victories

Beyond the upsets, several players delivered commanding performances that caught the eye.

Scottish thrower Cameron Menzies produced a truly majestic performance, averaging over 104, to extinguish Raymond van Barneveld’s hopes of adding to his single Euro Tour title. Menzies continued his dominance over the Dutch legend, extending his perfect record against Van Barneveld to five wins in five meetings. Igniting his game midway through the match, Menzies surged clear and now progresses to face Ross Smith.

Meanwhile, it’s been a challenging period for Australia’s leading light, Damon Heta, “The Heat,” who will be relieved to have battled past Madars Razma. Despite his nine career titles on the floor, Heta has yet to advance beyond the third round in ten Players Championship events this season. His resilient and professional display against the Latvian, where he maintained strong scoring and doubling despite conceding breaks, will be a confidence booster. Heta now faces Germany’s number one, Martin Schindler, who will undoubtedly have the home crowd firmly behind him.

Kim Huybrechts, “The Hurricane,” continues his purposeful surge towards World Matchplay qualification. His latest Euro Tour victory came at the expense of Dirk van Duijvenbode. Both players delivered strong statistical returns, but it was Huybrechts, a former champion of this event, who showed superior clinical precision in the crucial closing moments. He now looks forward to a second-round meeting with James Wade.

A memorable moment arrived when Swedish star Oskar Lukasiak registered his maiden victory on a Euro Tour stage. He edged past two-time PDC major champion Daryl Gurney in a pulsating encounter. Lukasiak built a commanding 5-1 lead, only for a perplexing lapse on his doubles to allow Gurney, “Superchin,” back into the match, forcing a deciding leg. However, with the advantage of throw, Lukasiak composed himself to convert his tenth match dart, securing his progression to face Danny Noppert in round two. For Gurney, it was an uncharacteristically underwhelming performance.

Completing the lineup for Saturday’s fixtures, local qualifier Niko Springer romped to a commanding victory over compatriot Robin Masino. Springer rarely needed to push beyond second gear to assert his dominance in this all-German affair. However, he will face a much tougher test in his next outing against the reigning champion, Gary Anderson.

What’s Next?

Round one has concluded, and all sixteen incoming seeds are now fully aware of the challenges awaiting them on Saturday. A glance at the fixture list reveals a plethora of tantalizing encounters, and for many making their opening appearance in this year’s tournament, it may prove to be a fleeting one as the competition intensifies.
