Darts Drama Unfolds: New Stars Emerge as Veterans Fight for Euro Tour Spots!

In a thrilling two-day darts spectacle in Wigan, new talent seized the spotlight while seasoned pros battled fiercely for coveted spots on the European Tour. Ten places were up for grabs across two upcoming events in Riesa (International Darts Open) and Kiel (Baltic Sea Darts Open). We saw four players make their season debut in Riesa, and another three in Kiel, including reigning Lakeside champion Jimmy van Schie and a surprising return for Justin Hood. Veterans like Kim Huybrechts and Cristo Reyes continued their strong qualifying runs, but the dream of qualifying for both events proved elusive for almost everyone, highlighting the incredible depth of talent in professional darts today.

The Fierce Battle for Riesa: New Faces and Consistent Performers

Following two intense afternoons of Players Championship action, attention quickly shifted to the European Tour qualifiers. A total of ten valuable spots were available for the upcoming International Darts Open in Riesa, Germany, and the Baltic Sea Darts Open in Kiel, Germany. The first qualifier focused on securing places for Riesa, and it delivered some exciting results.

Four Newcomers Shine

A quartet of players successfully secured their maiden appearances of the season on the continental circuit. The English trio of Bradley Brooks, Tom Bissell, and Charlie Manby all navigated a fiercely competitive field with remarkable composure to book their spots in Riesa. They were joined by Dutchman Jeffrey Sparidaans, who will also grace the Euro Tour stage for the first time this year, marking a significant milestone in their careers.

Veterans Holding Strong

As expected, some familiar names demonstrated their consistent form. Kim Huybrechts and Cristo Reyes once again impressed during qualification. Huybrechts, a seasoned Belgian pro, has consistently secured his passport for subsequent tournaments this season, aside from the opening two events. He’s already reached the third round in both of his Euro Tour appearances to date, showcasing his enduring quality. Reyes, from Spain, continues to build an increasingly admirable qualification record this season, proving his consistent threat on the big stage.

Other Riesa Qualifiers

Completing the ten successful qualifiers from Robin Park for Riesa are:

  • Chris Landman
  • Madars Razma
  • Keane Barry
  • Connor Scutt

Within this group, only Keane Barry has managed to secure qualification on three occasions from seven attempts, highlighting his growing consistency. The others have each achieved the feat twice this season, a testament to the demanding nature of these qualifiers.

The Elusive “Double” Qualification Dream

With another wave of hopefuls entering the fray for the Baltic Sea Darts Open qualifier just hours later, many harboured ambitions of achieving a lucrative double qualification in Wigan. However, this aspiration proved incredibly difficult to attain. Indeed, among those who secured passage to Riesa, only Cristo Reyes came close to completing the double, falling at the final hurdle in the second qualifier. This illustrates the sheer depth of talent and the high pressure involved in these events, where even the most consistent players find it challenging to qualify for back-to-back tournaments.

Kiel Beckons: More Debuts and Surprising Comebacks

The Baltic Sea Darts Open qualifier saw another set of players punch their tickets to the Euro Tour, bringing more fresh faces and exciting stories.

Three More Season Debuts

Three players ensured their maiden Euro Tour appearances of the season for the Kiel event:

  • Somewhat surprisingly – particularly in light of his mesmerising recent World Championship exploits – Justin Hood booked his long-awaited return to this particular stage. After narrowly missing out on the opening seven events, the Somerset thrower will now feature in Kiel next month, much to the delight of his fans.
  • The afternoon also marked the forthcoming Euro Tour debut of reigning Lakeside champion Jimmy van Schie. Since acquiring his Tour Card, the Dutchman has yet to progress beyond a board final on the Players Championship circuit and will be eager for Kiel to ignite his campaign and establish himself on the PDC tour.
  • There was also cause for celebration for German favourite Max Hopp, who will make his Euro Tour bow of the year on home soil, undoubtedly hoping to leverage the crowd’s support for a strong performance.

Dramatic Encounters and Other Key Qualifiers

Two-time PDC major winner Dimitri Van den Bergh came agonisingly close to breaking his Euro Tour duck for 2026, only to be denied by James Hurrell. The Belgian relinquished a 4-3 advantage as Hurrell, known as ‘Hillbilly’, surged through three consecutive legs to snatch the Kiel qualification spot in a thrilling finish.

Recent Pro Tour runner-up Alan Soutar also progressed, securing his place in Graz next month and, a fortnight later, Germany, courtesy of his strong exploits. Lukas Wenig and Ricky Evans share identical trajectories this season, both having featured in the European Darts Trophy and Belgian Darts Open earlier in the year, with Kiel marking their third Euro Tour appearance, showing their consistent presence on the circuit.

Experience and Youth on Display

Young Polish prodigy Sebastian Bialecki now boasts an impressive 50% success rate in Euro Tour qualifiers this season, converting four of eight attempts. At the opposite end of the experience spectrum, veteran Ian White mirrors that record. The 55-year-old, who debuted on the European circuit in its inaugural year of 2012, has three titles to his name and will undoubtedly be eager to add a fourth. Rounding off the Kiel qualifiers is Jeffrey de Zwaan, for whom the Baltic Sea Darts Open will represent his third Euro Tour outing of the campaign, solidifying his return to form.
