The Asian Tour’s return to Singapore delivered an unforgettable weekend of darts, with Filipino star Christian Perez stealing the show by clinching two consecutive titles. This incredible double victory not only marked his first wins in over three years but also dramatically propelled him into a strong position for the coveted World Championship spots. While Motomu Sakai also shone, briefly leading the rankings, the battle for the top five qualification places is now more intense than ever, featuring breakthrough performances and record-extending wins from other key players like Lourence Ilagan.

The Race to Alexandra Palace Heats Up

The Asian Tour roared back into action in Singapore after a two-month mid-season break, marking the fifth of seven crucial weekends. This leg of the tour is where the competition truly intensifies, as players vie for a coveted spot at the World Championship, held annually at London’s iconic Alexandra Palace.

Entering the Singapore weekend, the 2026 Order of Merit (the ranking system determining World Championship qualifiers) was led by Japanese duo Haruki Muramatsu and Motomu Sakai. Close behind were other World Cup stars, Man Lok Leung and Paolo Nebrida. With only the top five players guaranteed a spot at December’s World Championship, the battle for that final qualification position was particularly fierce.

Christian Perez, a 2023/24 Tour Card Holder, held the precarious fifth spot by a mere $400 margin over Lok Yin Lee. With 16 of 28 events already completed, every dart thrown in Singapore would prove critical.

Saturday’s Thrills: Sakai’s Ascent and a Breakthrough Performance

The first event of the weekend, Event 17, saw some incredible darts from the Last 32 stage onwards. Players like Motomu Sakai, Aris Quijano, and Louis Nazarene Lopez all registered averages over 100.

  • Motomu Sakai Dominates: Tour leader Haruki Muramatsu made an early exit in the Last 16, creating an opening that Sakai seized with both hands. Sakai powered through the competition to claim his sixth career title, and his second of the season. This victory propelled him to the top of the World Championship Race.
  • Sakai’s Growing Legacy: This win placed Sakai level with Muramatsu and Asada as the second most successful Japanese player in Asian Tour history, with six titles. He’s now just one title behind the legendary Ryusei Azemoto – an astonishing achievement given his first win was only last year!
  • Rolly Gabiana’s Historic Run: The true underdog story of the event belonged to Filipino Rolly Gabiana. After seven years on the circuit, Gabiana had never progressed past the Last 16. In Singapore, he not only broke that barrier but went all the way to his very first Semi-Final, defeating strong opponents like Sho Okano and Lourence Ilagan. He continued his impressive form in the second event, reaching the Quarter-Finals.

Perez’s Comeback Begins: A Three-Year Wait Ends

Motomu Sakai carried his strong form into the second event of the weekend, Event 18, reaching the Semi-Finals to maintain his lead over Muramatsu. However, his dominant run was finally halted by an exceptional performance from Christian Perez.

  • Perez’s Stellar Performance: The former ProTour Semi-Finalist delivered a brilliant 102.09 average to defeat the in-form Motomu Sakai.
  • First Title in Years: Perez then advanced to the Final, where he overcame his 2024 World Cup teammate, Alexis Toylo, to claim his first Asian Tour Title in over three years.
  • Crucial Ranking Boost: This victory was incredibly important, as it pulled Perez out of the immediate “danger zone” in the intensely competitive World Championship Race.
  • Other notable performances in Event 18 included ton-plus averages from Yuta Hayashi and semi-finalist Christian de los Reyes.

Sunday’s Double Delight: Perez Does It Again!

Sunday kicked off with Event 19, which saw a surprising early exit for Motomu Sakai, who fell 4-1 to Joel Hizon in the Last 16. Hizon went on to reach a Semi-Final for only the third time in his career.

The Final was a rematch of the previous event, featuring Alexis Toylo and Christian Perez. Despite Toylo’s strong performance, Perez defied a 97+ average to secure victory with the same 5-1 scoreline.

This was a truly remarkable feat for Christian Perez:

  • After waiting over three years for an Asian Tour title, he secured back-to-back victories in as many events.
  • These consecutive wins propelled him to second place on the 2026 Order of Merit, significantly boosting his hopes for a return to the World Championship after a four-year absence.

Ilagan’s Record-Extending Triumph

The weekend concluded with Event 20, which showcased more high-scoring darts. Lourence Ilagan fired in a brilliant 109.39 average in the Last 16 – the highest recorded in Singapore over the weekend. Hong Kong’s Man Lok Leung also impressed with a 105.76 average in the Quarter-Finals.

Ultimately, it was Ilagan who went all the way, defeating his former World Cup teammate Paolo Nebrida in the Final to claim the title.

  • A Significant Win: This was a crucial title for Lourence Ilagan, a three-time ranking winner on the Asian Tour with 16 titles to his name. Prior to Singapore, he had yet to win in 2026 and sat in 28th place in the World Championship race.
  • Extending His Legacy: He now extends his record as the player with the most Asian Tour Titles to 16, a commanding six titles clear of his compatriot Alexis Toylo.

The World Championship Picture: What’s Next?

The Singapore leg has significantly shuffled the rankings. The top five players on the Asian Tour Order of Merit will qualify for the World Championship, while the top 64 will secure spots in the Asia Championship.

Currently, Motomu Sakai also leads the Steel Darts Japan Order of Merit. If he maintains this position, he would qualify for the World Championship through the Japanese rankings. This means his spot from the Asian Tour Order of Merit would “pass down” to the player in sixth place, adding another layer of intrigue to the qualification race.

The Asian Tour will continue its exciting journey in early August in Manila, followed by its grand conclusion in Hainan in September. The Asia Championship will then take place directly after, promising more high-stakes darts action.
