Darts Champion Gian van Veen Scores a Perfect 180 for Maths Education in Sheffield!

World Darts Championship finalist Gian van Veen recently took a break from his professional schedule to champion numeracy skills at a primary school in Sheffield. Supporting National Numeracy Day, Van Veen joined students for ‘Bullseye Maths’ sessions, a unique program that combines the excitement of darts with practical maths challenges. The initiative, in partnership with Vanquis and National Numeracy, aims to build children’s confidence with numbers, demonstrating that learning can be both engaging and fun, especially when connected to sports they enjoy.

Darts Star Steps Up for Numeracy

Dutch darts sensation Gian van Veen, renowned for his impressive achievements as the reigning European Champion and World Youth Champion, made a special appearance in Sheffield. Ahead of his Premier League commitments, Van Veen dedicated his time to support National Numeracy Day, an annual event run by the independent charity National Numeracy. This day is dedicated to helping people of all ages become more confident and comfortable with numbers.

Van Veen visited Watercliffe Meadow Community Primary School, where he participated in the charity’s “Big Number Natter”. During this session, he openly shared his own experiences with mathematics, encouraging students to embrace numbers rather than fear them. His personal story helped bridge the gap between abstract maths concepts and real-world relevance, particularly in the context of professional sports.

What is Bullseye Maths?

Following his discussion, Van Veen led two engaging sessions of the PDC’s Bullseye Maths numeracy scheme. This innovative program is designed to make learning maths both interactive and enjoyable for young students. It ingeniously combines exciting darts activities with practical maths challenges, transforming a potentially intimidating subject into a fun game.

  • Combines Darts and Maths: Students learn mathematical concepts through the practical application of scoring and strategy in darts.
  • Engaging for All Ages: Tailored for primary school children, specifically Year Five students in this instance, to build foundational numeracy skills.
  • Partnership for Learning: Supported by the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) and delivered by the JDC’s (Junior Darts Corporation) Education Team, in association with Vanquis and National Numeracy.

The core idea is to show children that maths is not just about textbooks and equations, but a vital skill used in everyday life, including sports.

Making Maths Fun and Engaging

The impact of the Bullseye Maths session on the students was immediately evident. Dave Tompkinson, a Year 5 teacher at Watercliffe Meadow, highlighted the transformative effect: “The Bullseye Maths event really opened my eyes to the value of darts in primary schools and the brilliant influence it can have on mathematical developments. It was amazing to see children who really lack confidence in maths shine as the darts gave numbers a purpose.” He enthusiastically rated the experience “a 10/10 and a big 180 for us!”

Tim Schwarz, Head of Brand and Marketing from Vanquis, emphasized their commitment to making learning accessible: “As proud partners of the PDC, we’re delighted to support Bullseye Maths and bring learning to life in such an engaging way. Collaborating with National Numeracy Day helps us champion confidence with numbers, showing young people that maths can be both accessible and fun, whether in the classroom or through the world of darts.”

Sam Sims, CEO of National Numeracy, reiterated the charity’s mission: “Today is all about helping children and families build confidence with numbers and recognise that maths is everywhere. Bullseye Maths sessions like this are a brilliant way to bring that message to life, showing students how numeracy connects to the sports and activities they already enjoy.”

The Wider Impact of Bullseye Maths

The Bullseye Maths session in Sheffield is part of a broader initiative by the JDC’s Education Team, which has been delivering similar programs across England and Wales throughout the year. Hundreds of students have already benefited from this unique scheme, proving its effectiveness in fostering a positive attitude towards mathematics.

Gary Horsley, Director of Education at JDC, perfectly summarized the synergy between the sport and the subject: “Maths and darts just go together and today’s session really developed the students’ maths skills using darts as a fun example.” He also commended the enthusiasm shown by everyone at Watercliffe Meadow, underscoring the success of integrating fun, interactive learning into the curriculum. These sessions are crucial for helping pupils learn together, have fun, and build essential skills that will support them throughout their lives, extending far beyond the classroom or the dartboard.
