The world of professional darts is rapidly expanding beyond its traditional European strongholds, with the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) actively pursuing growth in Saudi Arabia and the United States. While the Saudi Darts Masters marked a significant step, PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter clarifies that the kingdom’s interest lies in grassroots development and a return visit is planned for January, dismissing any talks of a major televised event there. Meanwhile, the USA presents the sport’s biggest long-term opportunity, despite its complex market, with the PDC aiming to cultivate a homegrown American darts superstar to elevate the game’s status.

Darts Eyes the Middle East: Growth Beyond the Oche

The Premier League of Darts might be filling arenas across Europe, but the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) is setting its sights much further afield. Their recent foray into Saudi Arabia with the inaugural Saudi Arabia Darts Masters earlier this year wasn’t just about hosting an event; it was a strategic move in the sport’s global expansion.

PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter emphasizes that Saudi Arabia’s investment in sports, including darts, goes beyond mere spectacle. “The Saudis invest in sport and often they invest because they want to see local development,” Porter explained. “They want to see young people participating in different sports.”

This suggests a focus on building sporting infrastructure and development programs to encourage participation from the ground up, rather than solely staging elite competitions. Despite recent shifts in some Saudi-backed sporting ventures, Porter remains confident in darts’ ongoing relationship with the kingdom.

“We’re expecting to go back there in January. And I’m sure the event will be well received again,” he confirmed.

However, for those wondering if Saudi Arabia might one day host a major televised darts tournament, Porter was quick to set the record straight. “No, that’s not something we’ve ever discussed. That’s people surmising rather than anything that’s actually been considered.” This clarifies that while the region is important for growth, a full-fledged major tournament is not on the agenda.

America: The Ultimate Frontier for Darts?

While Saudi Arabia offers a new avenue for growth, Porter admits that the United States remains arguably the biggest long-term opportunity for darts. Darts is widely played recreationally across America, but it hasn’t yet achieved the professional recognition it enjoys in Europe.

“We want to improve the status of darts in America. The game is played all across the country, coast to coast, but it’s not really perceived as a professional sport there,” Porter stated.

The PDC’s strategy for the US is ambitious and multi-faceted:

  • Increase broadcast exposure: Get darts on more television screens.
  • Attract commercial partners: Bring in sponsors to fund growth.
  • Build a larger fanbase: Engage more fans and sell more tickets.
  • Create an American darts superstar: A homegrown talent could be a game-changer for the sport’s profile and growth.

Porter believes a prominent American player could significantly accelerate the sport’s development. However, he acknowledges the immense challenges posed by the US market.

Navigating America’s Unique Sporting Landscape

America’s sheer size and complexity make it unlike any other market the PDC has tackled. “The market is huge,” he noted. “And it’s dangerous to think of America as one market because it really isn’t.” Each region can have its own sporting preferences and media landscape.

Breaking into this mature sports market presents further hurdles:

  • It’s already saturated with established professional sports.
  • It’s very hard for any new sport to enter the mainstream.
  • Darts lacks a historical professional foundation in the US, unlike in Europe.

Despite these obstacles, Porter remains optimistic. The PDC has a proven track record of expanding into new territories, and he believes a patient, persistent approach will eventually yield results in the US. “We’ve travelled these roads before in other countries. They might just be slightly longer roads in America,” he concluded.

The Global Future of Darts

The message from the PDC is unequivocal: the future of darts isn’t confined to its traditional European strongholds. Its next major chapter is unfolding in new corners of the sporting world, driven by strategic international expansion and the ambition to make darts a truly global phenomenon.
