My own journey into the professional side of darts began by coaching and managing a player in his mid-forties who had never truly had a shot at the big time. Following his success, I’ve had the privilege to assist several other players, many of whom were also far from ‘spring chickens’. These players have gone on to win titles and compete on the biggest stages available in darts.
Two Powerful Reasons to Champion Seasoned Players
My enthusiasm for this group of experienced players stems from two core beliefs:
- Darts Allows for Exceptionally Long Careers: Unlike many physically demanding sports, darts offers a career path that can extend well into a player’s later years. A top-level career can genuinely begin in a player’s thirties, forties, or even fifties, and still reach significant peaks. The main limitations are often physical ability to continue and any psychological pressures accumulated over time, not age itself.
- The ‘Missed Generation’ Deserves Its Opportunity: I strongly believe that at least one full generation of darts players was unable to pursue their talent to its full potential. This was largely due to the near collapse of the professional game between approximately 1990 and 2008. While a professional circuit existed and eventually gained momentum, for most of that period, it could only truly sustain fewer than 50 full-time professionals across both major codes. This meant countless talented players lacked the development opportunities and wide range of chances that became available post-2010, and especially over the last decade.

It is precisely for these reasons that I am absolutely thrilled to witness the triumphs and significant milestones of Derek Coulson, aged 58! His journey is a testament to perseverance and skill.
