The opening day of the Elten Safety Shoes Dutch Darts Championship in Maastricht delivered thrilling action! Czech star Karel Sedlacek took a significant step towards securing his spot at the European Championship in Dortmund with a hard-fought victory. Meanwhile, local hero Heine Uuldriks captivated the home crowd with an astonishing comeback win, marking a dream debut. Other Dutch players also shone, setting the stage for an exciting weekend of darts as the tournament continues.

Sedlacek Powers Towards European Championship Qualification

The final European Tour event of 2026 kicked off with high stakes, and Karel Sedlacek rose to the occasion. The Czech darts sensation secured a crucial 6-4 victory over England’s Callan Rydz, a performance highlighted by seven maximums (180s). This win significantly boosts Sedlacek’s chances of reaching the prestigious European Championship later this month in Dortmund.

“That was really hard for me!” admitted Sedlacek after his first career win against Rydz. “Callan is one of the best players in the world, I know that, but I took my chances and I won. I made many mistakes, but I still won so I will take that.”

Sedlacek now finds himself in a critical qualifying position. His next challenge is a formidable one: a second-round clash against German number one Martin Schindler, who currently holds the final automatic spot for Dortmund. The outcome of this match will be pivotal for both players’ qualification hopes.

“I’m really happy for the chance to make it to Dortmund,” Sedlacek added, “I will be ready, Martin is a great player, today was the first step, tomorrow is the second, I’m ready.”

Local Heroes Ignite Maastricht with Sensational Performances

The atmosphere in Maastricht truly ignited thanks to the incredible displays from the Host Nation Qualifiers. Heine Uuldriks delivered the afternoon’s most dramatic moment, staging a breathtaking comeback from 3-0 down against Ricardo Pietreczko. Uuldriks fought his way back to lead 5-4, only for the German to level with a superb 12-dart leg.

In the nail-biting deciding leg, Uuldriks held his nerve with remarkable composure. With Pietreczko waiting on 54, the Dutchman sealed a dream debut by hitting an 81 checkout on the bullseye. The crowd erupted in celebration.

“It was my first time up here, everyone told me to enjoy, but me, I just wanted to win,” said a jubilant Uuldriks, who will now face Brendan Dolan in the next round. “Pietreczko played brilliantly the first few legs, then I took over and then checked it out, it was unbelievable. A couple of weeks ago I thought that I wanted to do more in darts – this is what I came for.”

Uuldriks wasn’t the only local success story. Jimmy van Schie also thrilled the home fans by edging out Kim Huybrechts in a gruelling last-leg thriller, leaving the Belgian’s Dortmund hopes hanging by a thread.

Other Dutch favourites who delighted the crowd included Dirk van Duijvenbode, who dispatched James Hurrell 6-1, and Niels Zonneveld, who secured a 6-4 win over Mike De Decker. Van Duijvenbode will next meet Ryan Searle, while Zonneveld faces Polish number one Krzysztof Ratajski.

Further Victories and Qualification Battles Unfold

Across the board, the first day saw many players secure crucial wins and advance their qualification bids:

  • Cristo Reyes booked his European Championship place in style, racing past Krzysztof Kciuk 6-2 with four maximums.
  • Cameron Menzies continued his strong form with a dominant 6-1 victory over Nick Kenny, setting up a clash with Stephen Bunting.
  • Ryan Joyce produced the day’s only whitewash, sweeping aside Owen Bates 6-0.
  • Dave Chisnall posted a routine 6-4 win over Jonas Masalin, strengthening his own qualification claims.
  • Sebastian Bialecki remains firmly in the European Championship hunt after beating Daryl Gurney 6-4. The Polish number two is just £5,000 behind Martin Schindler and faces a massive test against world number three Gian van Veen in the next round.
  • Jeffrey De Graaf ended Mickey Mansell’s challenge 6-3.
  • William O’Connor set up a mouth-watering clash with darts legend Michael van Gerwen after a 6-2 victory over Richard Veenstra.
  • Andrew Gilding and Michael Smith both survived tense last-leg deciders against Max Hopp and Stephen Burton respectively.
  • Scott Williams claimed his first European Tour win of 2026 by edging Niko Springer 6-5.
  • Damon Heta saw off the final Host Nation Qualifier Maikel Verberk 6-4.

The Dutch Darts Championship continues with a bumper double session on Saturday, as the 16 seeded players enter the fray, promising even more high-quality darts and dramatic encounters.
