The 2023 WDF Europe Cup in Torshavn witnessed an extraordinary display of darts talent across generations. Fifteen-year-old Scottish prodigy Mitchell Lawrie became the youngest-ever winner of the Europe Cup Men’s Singles title, showcasing incredible skill and composure. Simultaneously, 66-year-old English legend Deta Hedman, already the reigning WDF World Champion, claimed her second Europe Cup Women’s Singles title – an astonishing 32 years after her first. Their victories highlight the timeless appeal and competitive spirit of darts, with Lawrie’s win marking a new era and Hedman’s solidifying her enduring legacy, also helping England secure the overall women’s title.

Mitchell Lawrie: A New Star is Born at 15

History was made at the WDF Europe Cup as Mitchell Lawrie, a remarkable 15-year-old from Scotland, clinched the Men’s Singles title. His victory over Croatia’s Zvonimir Lešić in the final was not just a win, but a powerful statement, making him the youngest player ever to lift this prestigious trophy.

A Dominant Performance

  • In a thrilling final, Lawrie defeated Lešić 7-4.
  • He boasted an incredible average of 101.26.
  • Lawrie hit four maximum 180s, demonstrating his scoring power.
  • He secured five legs in 15 darts or fewer, showcasing efficiency and speed.

Lawrie wasted no time asserting his dominance. He opened the final by taking the first leg with a precise 49 finish (hitting double 17, single 7, and double 4). He then hit three maximums in the first three legs, surging to a rapid 3-0 lead.

Despite Lešić’s valiant efforts – including two impressive 12-dart legs and an average of 96.52 himself – Lawrie consistently found an answer. The young Scot maintained his composure, ultimately sealing his historic win in the 11th leg with a sharp 13-dart finish.

This triumph isn’t an isolated incident. Lawrie has been consistently proving his mettle, having already secured WDF titles at various men’s events across Denmark, Gibraltar, Ireland, and Scotland. His most notable prior victory was at the prestigious British Open, underscoring his rising status in the darts world.

Deta Hedman: The Enduring Queen of Darts Reigns Again

Thirty-two years after her first taste of Europe Cup Women’s Singles glory, Deta Hedman, the 66-year-old English legend, has once again been crowned champion. This incredible achievement comes while she also holds the title of reigning WDF World Champion, adding another gold medal – her 17th overall – to her illustrious career.

A Legacy Continues

  • Hedman defeated Wales’ Eve Watson 7-4 in the final.
  • She averaged 80.81, compared to Watson’s 71.04.
  • The English star hit five 180s and ten 140s throughout the match, displaying her consistent high scoring.
  • Her victory also confirmed England’s overall title in the women’s competition, solidifying her timeless impact.

Hedman started the final strong, quickly establishing a formidable 5-1 lead, including a rapid 15-dart leg in the fourth. Her opponent, Eve Watson, celebrating her 50th birthday on the day, showed incredible resilience. Watson fought back, winning three of the next four legs to narrow the gap to 6-4, even leaving Hedman on a tricky ‘2’ finish in the tenth leg.

However, the veteran champion’s experience shone through. Hedman calmly closed out the match in the 11th leg with a well-executed 16-dart finish, securing her momentous second Europe Cup singles title.

Hedman’s success was part of a dominant performance by the English women’s team. Earlier in the day, Laura Turner and Steph Clarke secured the pairs event title. With Hedman leading the charge, England also advanced to the final of the Women’s Teams event, where they were set to face Ireland, aiming for a clean sweep across the women’s competitions.
